Hi!
Today I searched in the internet and found this forum.
I am an 18-year-old high school student from Germany.
I would like to go to Japan this summer and practice kendo there for around 3-4 weeks. But recently I got some problems: unfortunately I have no place to stay there and I have no contact to a dojo in Japan. When I was 16/17 I have been to an exchange year in Japan so I can speak Japanese but unfortunately I have no place to stay and no dojo. Could anyone of you give me information about dojos which take in foreigners and about cheaper places to stay ?
I would be really thankful for an answer, Yours Mina

That place sounds quite interesting... at first I was a little sceptical when I read their 'kendo diet summer plan' - anyone who loses over 15kg will be invited on a kendo research trip to china! However, they're clearly very proactive in spreading kendo, with features on giving Iraqi diplomats a taste of kendo, a similar thing for Americans, and teaching kendo to people with physical disabilities in foreign countries. Looks like they travel around quite a bit as well. I'd be surprised if you found a more accomodating place...

There are some apartment-renting services for longer-term stays; they allow you to rent a furnished apartment for a month at 80000 yen or so in Tokyo, I believe. Google should be able to help you with that.
Ask far as a dojo goes, it helps to have contacts rather than being some guy wandering off the street who wants to train for a little while. Ask your sensei and senpai; they may have experience/contacts that can help you.

One such apartment rental place that you are thinking of is called Leopalace. The longer you stay and the more rent you pay up front, there seem to be discounts, at least last time I checked.
I have not stayed with them, but I knew a couple people who did. There is cheaper, but they didn't think it was a bad place to go through.
Have you done kendo before? Because 3 - 4 weeks of kendo in Japan will be mostly footwork and suburi only. Not that that is bad, and you will get a good foundation to start, but you won't get that far in that short of time. Just checking on what your expectations are...

I didn't even know LeoPalace had that kind of service; I'd only heard about their expensive, crappy, tiny, un-furnished apartments for long-term lease.

Read the thread carefully, guys. It's a spambot duplicating the text from the first post in this thread, which is from five years ago.

Never even noticed... thanks for pointing that out.
