I see that there are quite a few Canadians in this forum. I was just wondering if any of you participated in the Steveston Kendo Tournament? That is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest tournament in North America.

I wasn't there but...
Team - 1st SCKF, 2nd Calgary
4dan+ - 1st Daisaku Taguchi (Sunrise), 2nd Taro Ariga (Tustin), 3rd Motoki Asaoka (Youshinkan) and ???
Not sure of the other results. Top two places in ladies were from the US somewhere, one of the 3rds was Mako Hayashi (Vancouver).

Took 3rd. Same as last year, but I think I did better overall this year. The best thing about that tournament is the party afterwards at Blarney's.

oh yeah, and the tournament went really smoothly and ended early, a little before 8; not like last year when it ended at like 10 pm. so congrats to steveston kendo dojo for running a great tournament.

I'm glad I was at steveston ^ ^. Mannn I was blown away when I saw Danny Yang's kendo. He inspired a newbie like to practice even harder.

I went to go see that tournament, i think the 1-3 dan group was harder then the 4 dan and above group. They were so fast! The jyodan guy, he just killed everyone he fased(exept the last one in the indivisual). The nito guy, he just didn't know when to stop. And D. Yang, he was just fooling around the hole tournament. I was just shocked. And they were all from SCKF. The team even won! I was wondering why they didn't put the nito guy(itokazu) on the team. I think he would have done better then some of the 4 dan and above people that they had.

I herd that they do some crazy practice at their dojo.
If anyone knows where they are from, i would like to know. I want to see how the practice is like.

Did you participate, Tenken? Danny Yang is from Torrance dojo from what I heard from my friend, and Itokazu and Chinen both are from Covina dojo.

4th March 2003, 02:41 PM
yes, i am Japanese but right now, living in California. Don't really want to say which dojo i'm from, "it's not so great here". I just went to this tournament last month to just see how kendo was in other countries. And no, i did not participate. I will next year though! I herd that Mesterkurukuru, a person also on this forum, will be at the tournament also so i'm kinda looking forward to seeing this guy. i herd that he/she is pretty strong.

You're right about that.. When I went 2 years ago, there were like 300 participants. There were ~100 people in Adult Kyu alone! Well, it seems like some things didn't change looking at the results.....

Samurai999....That you Konosan??? Their seem to be a lot of names on there from SCKF. Wish I could make the North/South Taikai this year to bring the Adult Kyu trophy down here. Next year it's mine. :D

Yup, the one and only. :D How's the Socal life Brad?
Unfortunately, my kendo career is on hold right now since I'm recovering from a completely ruptured Achilles tendon. Out for another couple of months.
Wait a second.. The adult kyu trophy from the North-South is already down there!!! Remember I got second last year to that Torrance dude. :o And about the Mens team and Womens team trophies? Don't bet on it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.. :D :D :D I'll be at the tourney, but with a big boot on my left leg.
Tim
