Hello,

I was just watchin an anime (Forgot it's name) and there was this part where a student of the Yagyu Shinkage Ryu school was hired to kill someone from this non-existant ryu. The guy from the "(Non-existant) legendary ryu" looked like he was about to do an iai strike on the Yagyu guy but instead he drops his sword and goes into a kenpo stance while the Yagyu guy goes into a kenjutsu stance. I was wondering if Kenpo is a another bujutsu form of hand-to-hand combat alongside jujutsu?

Hi All...

Please do not confuse Kenpo with Kempo... despite the Wikipedia entry, they are not synonymous...

Also... please note that Kempo is not always Shorinji Kempo...

If you want to know more about Shorinji Kempo then please check out the re-vamped website at: http://www.shorinjikempo.or.jp/wsko/

For an interesting and detailed history of Shorinji Kempo, check out : http://treefox.co.uk/kempo/history/history1.htm

For a Shorinji Kempo Dojo in your region, check out: http://www.shorinjikempo.or.jp/wsko/list/

cheers

The anime is called "Shura no Toki". The story is ok but too repetitive, although it has some good fighting scenes of various famous swordsmen.

It all depends on the Kanji, since Kempo/Kenpo can mean fist method or sword method depending on the Kanji used. (e.g. Araki-ryu Kempo 荒木流拳法 & Kukishin-ryu Kenpo 九鬼神流剣法 ).

In Hiragana & Katakana, symbols ”ん” & ”ン” can be pronounced as "n" or "m". Depends on the tradition of the ryuha and the user of the language.

It's a bit like a debate long ago with SMR Jo practicioners and the usage of "Shindo" & "Shinto" in the name of the ryuha. Some preferred Shindo Muso-ryu and others preferred Shinto Muso-ryu. linguistically, both are correct, since the Japanese word, "神道" can be prounounced with a "d" or a "t". It's really up to preference and how the language is used in the group you are in.

What's an iai strike?

I'm guessing, but I think he means nuki-uchi or nukitsuke. *shrugs*
