I'm such a dumb-ass, I crashed so hard on my mountain bike that I separated my right shoulder. It's really painful and I can't do much of anything. I see the orthopedist in a few days to get the scoop, but right now it feels like I'll be out of action for a month or two at least.

On the positive side, my bike is OK.

ouch man, I mean OUCH!

hope you get better soon... but don't rush it, if you don't give it all the time it needs to heal, it may get permanently damaged. my left knee is out of service for the second time now, I've learnt that the hard way

Jon,
Take care of it. Do you have an orthopedist already? If not I'll check with my guys in Boise and find out who is the best in the Pocatello area.
Sorry about that.

Let it heal fully and give it a little extra. I had a surgery last year and kinda went back when it wasnt fully healed, and now I get these pains that hurt like a mother. Didnt go to the doctor cause it was only temporary pains, but they hurt.

Greetings,

I hurt my should bad last year as well. Be patient and let it heal. Also, don't miss any of the physical therapy sessions, even though they may hurt like the dickens! I was out of commision for about two months, and it took about a year for it to heal (I'm about 98% right now). Good luck and speedy recovery!

Lets hope it is only a few months. It has taken me 5 years of therapy and my shoulder is still stiff.

Maybe you could start doing one handed Jodan :) when your doctor gives you the ok.

take care,
Mark

You know, there was a movie where someone who got beat up said he fell off his bike. The bike was in good condition. What really happened was the guy was beat up by someone. That movie is "The Karate Kid".

I don't think I need to preface this question any further, JByrd, who beat you up?

On the positive side, my bike is OK.Feeling stupid for not asking before but...I assume Michelle was not entangled in said collision with the ground?

Aghh. I've had some pretty nasty biking accidents myself (...just...well because I'm kinda cursed when it comes to stuff like that...or...just dumb). I know how it feels. Stay healthy and get well soon.

Thanks to you all for the nice words of sympathy.

I got good news today: The ligaments holding the joint together are intact. If things go well I could be easing myself back into action in as little as 6 weeks.

The doctor, also a mountain biker, was sporting a scabby elbow from his most recent crash. :) We spent half the visit talking about local trails.

Okay, here's where I come clean about how dumb I really am.

A few minutes before the accident I stopped suddenly on the trail when a lazuli bunting (a very pretty bird) flew up in front of me. Michelle almost slammed into me.

Just before I crashed I took a quick glance back to see how close behind me she was. Before I got my head turned back to look at the trail I dropped off a three foot ledge.

Michelle didn't get to see the crash, but I was still in a heap in the creek bed when she got there. I'm sure she was disappointed; she's seen all my best crashes. Come to think of it, that's probably why she always makes me go first.

Get well soon mate. Lesson here is not to do any exercises which may harm your kendo training. :D

Jon,
Glad to hear that's it's not all that bad. Crashed and burned while doing impromptu birding on a lazuli bunting (http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?recnum=BD0344). Awesome. I once ran my jet boat aground looking at a drake cinnamon teal (http://www.ducks.org/waterfowling/gallery/index.asp?duck=6)on the Snake River so I can identify with the momentary lapse of judgment.

The real question is, did you add it to your life's list (http://www.backyardnature.net/birdlist.htm)?

Hi Byrd-sensei,

Oh, wow!! That must really hurt! I hope it gets better really soon. :) Hey, look at it this way. At least your katate suburi can really improve!! :D ...Because you can still practice that at least. Some suburi is better than none! And, you aren't completely out of action. You can still practice footwork and do some stretching still. And, you can still go to practices and work on this stuff with your students. Don't worry. It will be better before you know it. :)

Oh. You're not a dumb-a**. Accidents happen. Don't blame yourself. Mountain bikes do that. They crash! After all, if you were on dirt, dirt is not stable. You can't help that. Well, even if you were on pavement, accidents just happen. So, no need to call yourself a name, because you're not that. :)

I hope it doesn't turn out to be serious and I hope it gets better soon!

WOW!! You got to see a Lazuli Bunting?? LUCKY!!! So pretty!!!

Oh, and WOW, what a crash!! I think you may have my brother beat on creative bike crashing. :D I am REALLY glad you didn't kill yourself, and that Michelle-san didn't also get hurt too.

Come to think of it, too bad you didn't have it caught on video. You could have sent that into Funniest Videos and maybe won money for it!

Oooo, that must have been scary though, falling off that ledge.

You're still not dumb! :)
