For those of you who have or know what a Japanese apartment is set up like...

Where do you store your bogu? Even though I don't mind the bogu smell, I actually like it because it reminds me of Kendo time, my fiance is not so happy with it. She has a sensitive sense of smell. We live in a 2DK. Big for Japanese standards, not so big for that wonderful bogu smell. Where is the best place to store the bogu so the smell doesn't waft through the whole apartment? We are always airing out the place, but the bogu aura still remains with the gear, of course.

Enlighten me...

Go to nearest Kendogu store and ask for 'Kenro Spray'.
That'll help, trust me.

As I'm currently living in a hotel room, I know what you mean!.
Kenro spray helps and so does Febreeze..I have currently parked my bogu in the bath room, which is reasonably well ventilated.

Hmmn...I use a fan to dry out my bogu( I am very particular about bogu hygene and even wear gloves with the kote) and spray a bit of perfume inside. Once dry I have never had a problem with the smell(mind you my bogu is only about a year old).

Oh, except the time I left it in my car on a really hot day...lets just say my workmates were supporting public transport that day.

I've posted this once before somewhere. Try Clorox ( or any bleach ), diluted to 15-20 times, spray inside of Kote and Men, you will not have any smell. The smell is caused by organisms than the sweat itself. Clorox kills them all clean.

What about the genkan? Usually well ventilated, colder than the rest of the apartment, and if it smells bad you can blame it on the shoes. I don't keep my bogu there, but then, I live alone so there's no one else to complain about the smell.

"Febreeze" spray works great to deodorize, but it leaves a flowery smell. You can also try leving a cloth sack with baking soda ner the bogu (maybe tie it to the loop in the back of the do).

Hang your bogu outdoors on the veranda after parctice and let it dry a bit. Do not however put it in direct sunlight. A few hours on a sunny afternoon is usually enough to dry things out and kill off the little buggers that cause the worst of the smell. Then bring it in and store it in the bag and close the bag up.
I've also known a few people to put air fresheners or little bags of potpourri in or near their bogu when at home.
