Things are heating up big time in Iraq. Political views and the inevitable tragedy of war aside, I had another terrible thought. If war breaks out soon, what are the chances that the World Champs Committee will pull the plug on the tournament in Glasgow? Has this issue been broached so far?

Don't worry, Dr A. By the time WKC started, either the war would have finished, or that the world would be blown up by a massive nuclear bomb!!

:D

Okay just kidding.

From Japan to the UK there're only 2 routes, via Russia/ theGulf, or America... Equal opportunities for terrorist attacks!!

:D

On a more serious note, I do suppose that airport security would be at its highest alert level. Say, a lot of national team members would have their Shinai bag stuck at the Custom.

"Hey, you there, STOP! Why do you have so many fishing equipments??"

:D

If there are national team members who are afraid of getting to the UK because of possible terrorist attacks and such... just leave them alone... Maybe for them, risking their lives for a Kendo championship does not worth it...

Let there be peace.

Or the Naginata WC in San José end of June, for which I finally have certainty that I can go (and get my ass kicked). :|

... wonder if Iraq will have a team in Glasgow?

If so, wonder if they'll go back?

Alex, for better and for worse, if there's one thing that has survived in the UK, it's the 'stiff upper lip', when it comes to stuff like war (and terror)..of course, decades of IRA attacks has only helped maintain that.
I would be very surprised if the BKA decided to cancel the WKC because of the war, should it still be ongoing by then...it's simply not in their nature.
Of course there is the possibility that foreign competitors will stay away, due to fear of terror attacks, but that's just silly, IMO.

I would believe that we, as kendokas are stronger and more commited in our sport than that. I for one would continue on with the tournament. I'm not going to have a little wild saddam hussein or george bush run around calling the shots. We continue on. Don't let them affect us. Sometimes it's what we enjoy, that helps us through the situation of our lives and our world. It keeps us going. Why let it stop?

Human spirit never stops glowing. Gambatte!

I think that some of you may be missing the point that I was trying to make. I'm not talking about participating on a personal level. I remember in aftermath of 9-11 many international sporting fixtures were cancelled or postponed. There were also many airlines that weren't flying either. :(

Hrm, sure I guess a few things will be affected, like the airlines. But I doubt all airports/airways will be closed during the entire war. (if it is, I'll be in deep trouble). There's always a way. I doubt a war can affect so many things in countries that is not affected by battle. Sure maybe a few things will be postponed, but rather later than never.
