should be no flame to this :)
in reality it is two different fighting styles(though fencing is more of a sport than a martial art nowadays). Both have advantages and disadvantages.
The funniest argument i ever saw with kendo vs. fencing, a fencer made the comment "a quick stop thrust to the wrist and ive won".....lets think logicaly, you stab me int the wrist and pull the sword out, i continue the swing and remove you head from your shoulders.......who scored a point and who won a fight? REAL fencing was more oriented towards damage over time, were as the japanese sword arts are oriented towards one strike with MASSIVE damage. Afencer could probably kill a kendoka, but i think he would be dead as well. Theres just not enough potential to do enough damage quickly enough.
Just my opinion though

I personally have nothing against fencing. I have respect for anyone who does anything related to the sword. (Except fighting with driftwood on the beach...). I like to watch fencing to see how they move as oppose to how we move. When someone asks if I do anything besides sit at home I tell them I fence. Then they ask a ton of other dumb questions (yes...there ARE dumb questions) and I end up explaining kendo to them. Sometimes I can get off with just saying that I fence (which is what I want..because I don't want to talk to 3/4 of the people who ask me in the first place).

i find that very offensive. i am a driftwoodoka. the first and the only. sure my hakama may get sandy but i like to swing clubs and hit logs.

The only reason why I said driftwood-do is a joke is because it cannot match my Hiten-Mitsurugi Ryu. Bwahahaha, my Sakabatou is undefeatable!

yeah it was a joke. it would be weird making a sand castle and seeing some kid swinging driftwood and screaming in bogu.

the idea behind this was that i have seen this thread in other forums and it turned into a complete flame between the fencers and kendo lovers. things got really interesting when some guy came on who did both and started to pick out faults and similiarities in both sports. Just thought it maight get a bit more interesting in flames 'cos you can really let rip (and i dont mean farting :wink: )!

Having tried both at a beginner level of experience, Kendo is definitely my favourite out of the two. (Thats probably also why I've stuck with Kendo...)

you haven't got all of the spirituallity thing going in fencing. It's a classic case of olympicisation and now macdojo's are springing up all over england.

Hypothetically, if a musketeer and a samurai were pissed at each other and decided to fight, I would place my money on the samurai. As for whether fencing is better than Kendo or vice versa, that’s comparing apples and oranges.

actually the samurai destested guns, it was the foot soilders that used them, wouldnt you hate guns as well if you spent all ur life training and mastering techniques, then get killed by someone hu uses a gun?

Not true, they had great respect for the gun, they just didn't use them personnally. Musashi writes about different weapons and the use and say's;
From inside fortifications, the gun has no equal among weapons. It is the supreme weapon on the field before the ranks clash, but once swords are crossed the gun becomes useless.
How about a mouseketeer and a samurai?
How about a Muskehound! Dogtanian would (excuse me) pwn that $h1t
Which Muskehound Are You? (http://www.muskehounds.com/quiz2.htm)
You're Dogtanian! The eponymous hero of the show, a country pup who proves himself in the big city by his courage, sense of justice and incredible swordsmanship. You might want to work on that irritating whiny voice though.
