Ok people I know u have all familar and saw best science ficiton movie on earth STAR WARS .In star wars the JEDI order which protect the republic use light saber [kind of swords]. Now here is my one question. The way the jedis fight with their great techniques and moves do you believe they copied this techniques from the Kendo art?

Not really. Lucas took the word jidai out of sengoku-jidai (period of warring states, or something) to make 'jedi'. And occasionally Luke goes into jodan. But apart from that no, I don't think so.

Anjin-san is right about the origin of the Jedi name. And the Jedis were designed to look like "space samurai", but their "techniques" are not Kendo. Might look a little like Kendo o Kenjutsu, but defintively not really using neither of them.

You just finished a fight rehearsal with Nick Gillard. Was that fun? Nick is the man. This is my second go-round with Nick--he also did Shaft. Now he's doing lightsaber battles for us all, and a lot of Kendo stuff. I guess that, because I'm such a fan of Japanese samurai movies and I've watched a lot of Kendo fights, I'm doing pretty well at it. It's basically a lot more footwork than I thought. For the sword stuff, getting the feet right and getting the steps so you can actually do it right--it's a lot like dance choreography. The feet have to be right so that the strikes look correct.

He's put together a pretty exciting and incredible fight for me. And since I'm supposedly the second baddest person in the universe, I'm pretty efficient. I don't do a lot of fancy sword-twirling or anything. I dispense people pretty quickly, use as little energy as possible. But I'm pretty bad.

This is a Samuel Jackson quote from the official star wars site (http://www.starwars.com/episode-ii/bts/profile/f20020521/) , Nick Gillard did use some kendo stuff as he said.

What about when the Jedi attack the opponent with moves. What about when a sith and a jedi fight in a duel? I believe at that time they use some kendo moves do they?

Did you SEE Sam fight in episode 3? I didn't even care that he was about to kill the emperor... all I was thinking was 'Relax your arms!'

Why don't you just compare what you did last time you were in the dojo to what you see in star wars. There's little similarity. Mainly because a light-sabre is nothing like a sword.

Originally Lucas used a combination of Kendo, and saber techniques to train ol mark hammil. More saber though.

The prequils use all kinds of stuff. Mainly what ever looks good. I think you could call is Flashy-jutsu.

There might not be much Kendo in Star Wars, but there's a lot of Star Wars in our Dojo.

A well timed quote from the films can create a moment of mirth in your opponent, and the perfect opportunity to strike!!

I heard that in the original three Star Wars movies they did adapt kendo and fencing techniques for the lightsaber fight scenes. The guy who walked around as Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back was a champion sabre fighter and if you look at that final fight between Vader and Luke in Return of The Jedi, I've been told that certain moves that they do are reminicent of kendo. I haven't seen it for a while so don't take my word for it, just something I heard. And yeah, the whole time I was watching the new Star Wars movies, I kept thinking, "ok, if I was up against you, you'd be getting a nice big do/tsuki strike right about now:)."

The original film relied heavily on kendo - in fact there is footage of them training for the final sword fight of "a new hope" in costume with men on - a "tailored" men that fit in obi-wan's hood. As mentione earlier - the new films go nuts with anything that "looks cool".

That's Bob Anderson, sword choreographer for the Original Trilogy, the Princess Bride and the Lord of the Rings movies.

Not to split hairs, but David Prowse was in the suit - Bob Anderson was the stunt coreographer. David Prowse is really tall, and was also a professional bodybuilder. You can see him acting out of the suit in A Clockwork Orange (as Frank Alexander's bespecticled bodyguard). Quite a different build when compared to the string bean vader at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

Yes, David Prowse was in the suit for most of the movie, but Bob Anderson was in the suit for the lightsaber fight sequence with Alec Guiness.

Anyways, has anyone ever sat down and analyzed the ANH Vader v Obi-Wan fight like a kendo match?

Other than, they both sucked and moved like stiff, tense slugs?
