Let's say I'm not English, but I will be moving there probably next year, staying in the south yorkshire area: Wombwell barnsley to be exact. I was wondering, if anyone knows about dojos around that area and could tell me something about them. I know there's one at Bolton (Kearsley). I already sent an email there, and still waiting for a reply. But I'd like to keep an eye out for others.
I'm visiting on Easter April 4 - April 20, and would like to visit (my sensei encourages me to :) ) So feel free to leave a message on this thread.

Thanks ak76. I browsed through the list, that's how I found the one in Bolton. Problem is I'm not a native English, so I don't really know what is close to Wombwell Barnsley ^_^~ But thanks anyways. :D

Heh, I'm in the same boat. I start work in Bath next month so I'll be looking for a dojo too. For me its either Bristol or Oxford. Fun, fun, fun:D

LOL at least I'm not alone ;) Right now I've found Halifax and Bolton (many thanks to GMason for info ^-^). I think they'll do nicely. But feel free to post more dojos or your experiences in Halifax & Bolton.

Bolton (Kearsley) is my Main Dojo. I train there every Sunday under Sensei Needham. I have been going there for a year now and I love every second of it.
If you want some more information about our dojo or any of the affiliates, look at WWW.doshinkenyukai-kendo.org.uk

Wow, it seems we have a good few on this board who's from Bolton *feels already at home* :) I'm almost already sure I'm going to love it. Just searching to find a dojo that can be another home for me, like how my present dojo is to me at the moment. Thanks for the link emitbrowne. Hope to see you on Easter ^-^
(and hopefully if I give my bf a good bit more nudging and manipulating, he'll join asap *evil little Sinty critter*

I started at bolton a few years ago, but my commitments have taken me to Preston now. Its still the same dojo as Halifax and kearsley (doshinkenyukai). We have Halifax as our head dojo and Preston and Kearsley are branches. Im not sure how many students in total, but it must be getting up there now.
You can expect very challenging training reagardless of which club you frequent, however, i think you'll find that the same dedicated faces are usually training right across the northwest of england, this includes K.N.M.S in Manchester, and Yoshinkan in Liverpool, both great clubs!
But we'd be happy to have you at Do shin ken yu kai :) . If you notice the avatar, it is the club symbol, so when you see people on this forum with this avatar, you can link them to Doshinkenyukai....
As for the training, its difficult!!....I hope this all helps.
I look forward to training with you.

LOL i was wondering why some people here had the same avatars ^-^ GMason told me about the ones in Manchester, but again I don't know if I have the time to visit that one during easter.
Challenging training huh? Hrm, it seems I going to have a time keeping up with the members there ^-^ Else I'll be stumbling all over the place... please don't laugh *winks* How is the training difficult? Just tough? I've only been to my dojo and can only compare it to that. I guess I'll find out when I get there.
Thanks for the wonderful encouragement :) I'm still a beginner, so people please please don't expect anything special *fumbles with shinaii* I most likely will make a few mistakes. Different dojos, different trainers, different stuff at times :) But feel free to teach me what you can. It'll help my training and I can share it with the people in my dojo.
I look forward to visiting ya'll on Easter ^-^ And then summer next year, who knows. If I'm all settled in England and you got space for another member then, count me in :)

Training is difficult because we spend alot of time doing kakarigieko and jigieko. They can be pretty demanding physically somtimes, but thre always fun!

It's a tricky situation if you live in Sheffield - an hour to Halifax, an hour to New Ollerton. I know my lass and I are looking to start as soon as we find a club - is there any chance that one might start up a little closer to Sheffield? I know there's an Iaido club in Sheffield town centre... Would it be worth an hours drive there and back in an evening to get to the Ollerton/Halifax ones?
Any help would be appreciated...

Hi
I'm biased so feel free to ignore me. But Halifax is well worth the travel. It will be a bit of a journey but I think you will find it worth it.
North Ollerton is a good Dojo as well. I know quite a few people from there and they are all nice people, and the sensei is a nice bloke. He comes over to Halifax every now and again.
So if you are really keen go to both :-)

I am looking to attend the Halifax club too. For the first time in my life I have both money and a club within travelling distance. So I figure that now is the time to learn.
The only thing that bugs me is getting home from Halifax to Wakefield. Although I will only be doing beginners classes I will want to stay and watch the main practice. Due to the finish time this means that I cannot get home on bus or train. I do not own a car!
My solution is *cue fanfare* National Express. Get a coach from Halifiax to Wakefield at 23:40 travelling via Bradford and Leeds and getting home at, wait for it, wait for it, 01:15 on Saturday morning!!! I must need my head examined ha ha. Thank goodness the classes are on a Friday.
Still, I really want to do this so I have to accept the travel hassles.
