View Full Version : Fogged Glasses

As strange as this may sound - it happens every time. Near the end of class we gather up at one end of the dojang and the Master calls us out 2 at a time to bout. As long as I'm moving around practicing my glasses are fine. As soon as I sit down the heat off my body fogs them so badly I can't see. So when he calls my name. I'm all psyched, but I can't see a thing.
So, fellow Kenshi -what do I do to stop the fogging. I tried one of those no fog cloths (for car windows) but it didn't work real well. I really can't see without then. I can't imagine hitting son mok (kote) without them. My equilibrium gets upset when they're off. It seems like contacts or laser surgey is the only alternative.

The easiest way to beat me is to make me sweat, then stop the fight pretending to be in need of fixing equipment. I will then have to wait in sonkyu. Hence the fogging starts. Next we have a blind kendoka on the court. Not very difficult to beat.
Lol.

Here is a old trick used with paintball masks (before thermal lez), take a small amount of dish soap on your finger and spread it around on the inside of your glasses. You will see a blur, but much better than the fog.

I don't know if you have glass lenses or polycarbonate lenses. You can try applying anti-fog spray that is used on hockey masks, by Itech. It smells like swimming goggle anti-fog liquid so I guess it's the same thing. You spray it on, wipe it and let it dry. If there's more moisture than the anti-fog can handle, it will end up as water droplets instead of fog.

Spit. It may sound weird but anti fog is expensive, soap is very troublesome(seeing how u have to mix it with water and then let it dry evenly accross the glass surface).
A bit of spit rubbed on the lense before u start works well. I've been using that with my sports goggles for kendo and never had a problem.

Old Warrior, I have the same problem. :glasses: I wear glasses since I was a little kid and without them I'm blind. :ko: I can't see an inch before me. :cross_eye (Sempai where are u:confused: , oh there u are:devious: , ... meeeeen:grin: ; a few seconds later... hmm (sempai) that was my kote  )Then I tried contacts -> best decision I counldn't make. :D I was reborn :cheerful: -> it's such a good feeling, I see much bether then with glasses, the view is sharper there are no limitation -> u view is independet. It's gives you lot more selfconfidence. I can't imagine my life withut them, especially in Kendo! Glasses are causing much problems during practise -> u can't concentrate on important things (like zanshin ect.) while correcting glasses, u can't see anything, because the glasses get dirty (sweat), u have to clean them every five minutes and not to mention the fog and the pain when wearing men! Men presses dow the glasses on your nose and ears -> great pain . So I don't wear glasses when doing keiko in bogu -> and the boys in my club who are wearing glasses don't wear glasses too.
So, I recomed you contacts. You will see, once you try them, you won't wear anything else. But contacts are only for PWR (power) - (-0,5 to - 8 don't know exactly). For further info please ask your doc.
About laser operation:
- it's expensive,
- you PWR mustn't change for 2 years,
- it can be done only if you have PWR -
I hope I could help a little bit.

It really isn't that expensive. $8 for a 7.4 ounce bottle. You don't spray a lot on so it would last a year.

Spit. It may sound weird but .
You commonly see scuba divers spitting into their masks before putting them on, I don't dive myself, but they must think it works. I know a guy who dives a lot, if I see him in the next few days I'll ask him about it.

If there is no air flow behind the lenses they will fog up. Try to find a way to allow air to flow freely at the top and bottom of your lenses. They will not fog up.
Personally I can't wear contacts. For years I wore a small pair of glasses inside my Men but I didn't like how they would get jostled around because the temples are caught between my head and the Men. I NEED to wear my glasses.
One solution is to get glasses that are held on with an elastic headband. Another solution I have been using for the past year is to actually mount a pair of glasses (without the temples) into the Men grill.

There are two styles available, the ones with elastic headband shown here (http://kendoshop.com/eshop/index.php?mode=subdetail&num=190&flag=catedetail) or Mengan which clip into the men, shown at the bottom of this page (http://www.bogubag.com/Bogu/Pads/pads.html).
As far as laser surgery - my recommendation is against, based on a lot of information found here (http://www.surgicaleyes.org).
Contacts work well for me.

Use shaving cream. But spread it evenly and cleanly. Don't rinse it with water, just use issue. All you really do is put a bit of shaving cream on, use your fingers to spread it around and then use a piece of tissue to wipe off the shaving cream.
