View Full Version : Occupation and Kendo

Okay, as I browsed through this place a bit, I've noticed a lot of Kendokas who are either full time students or are involved with IT like I am (Oracle Programmer/Business Management/IT in General).

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post it, but I'm really curious just as to what your occupation is and how it affects your kendo, or how kendo affects your occupation.

I'm also curious as to see just how many IT-orientated people are into Kendo ;) Quite surprisingly we have a good few in here.

Currently eikaiwa teacher, previously and afterwards, high school mathematics teacher.

Kendo affects me by being fun, and I hope to create a club in the school I teach at with the help of the local dojos. Doing extracurricular activities tend to make you more of a person in a school and not just another "bastard" teacher that is out to make life difficult for the students. I makes the teaching easier because the kids don't just look at the negative aspects of you like your giving homework and grading them. Sometimes gets you a little more respect from some of the students.

I'm also part of an IT team (Network Security). I work at an University in Southern Brazil and practice kendo in the same University, so it comes quite handy I'd say. I just step out from work and step into the dojo which is just around the corner.

No real relationship between my occupation and kendo except that it pays a pretty good buck and allows me to buy all of my kendo toys!

kendo relieves stress, puts things in perspective. there are kendo concepts which are extremely useful in every day life such as fudoshin, shiki, zanshin, etc. which helps me mentally in living everyday life in the business world.

I'm also a software geek. I work for SED Systems here in Saskatoon. We do mostly ground systems to support the satellite industry, a lot of systems to monitor, test and control satellites and the associated networks. I'm currently working on the frequency management for Inmarsat's upcoming digital satellite network. Before this, I was working on the secure access control for XM Satellite Radio. We do our servers in C++ and our GUIs in Java.

aaah one more IT guy here. mostly Hardware/Network related. But i also do some Web Developing stuff.

how does my job affect Kendo and viceversa?

well, i'm the webmaster of our dojo's site (http://kenwakai.org/esp.htm). most likely the biggest page in spanish about kendo :D

we get a LOT(i mean a lot) of new people since i first put our page on the net and search engines. i'm glad i have the chance of helping promote the kendo around here in a way. all of you kenshi out there who want more students i suggest you build a page too!

also, i want to know from all the IT here, who else is webmaster of their dojo's page?? (i only know max is so far). we could create some sort of link exchange or IKSF(international kendo sites federation) and rule the world :D :D :D

This is an interesting thread. I took up Karate in the 1960's and turned to European Fencing in the 1980's as my body aged. Only recently did I discover Kumdo.

I have been a practicing lawyer for 29 years and my life has been spent in the trenches of better controversies. The one terrific benefit of the study of combat type arts is the ability to maintain focus under great stress. All of my pursuits have enabled me to withstand tremendous amounts of pressure without coming unglued or getting rattled. Also, those people who enter my personal space for intimidation purposes - don't bother me at all. The reality is that if any of these types could read my mind (as I size up their weak pysical points, contemplate a crippling attack or prepare for the possibility of an uprovoked assault) they would wet their pants.

The second marvelous benefit is the ability to release tension and stress in a healthy environment. And, the pursuit makes for great cocktail party conversation. Given the choice of chatting with a golfer or a kenshi - most will choose the kenshi.

The development of Martial Arts (especially minor ones outside Japan) relies heavily on the web. Ever notice how many beginners your club gets every year, comparing with those days without modems (at a decent speed)? Anyone who had stayed in the same dojo will see what I mean... It's all about publicity. Any dojo with a crappy site can get more new-comers than one without it, which sadly, also applies to certain McDojos.

Other than IT (which barely counts), there are limited jobs related to Kendo:-
Japanese Police
Japanese PE teacher
Researcher/ Professor
Bodogu-repairer/ maker

This year it involved Administration/Guidance, teaching Kendo, and a few complimentary English classes.

I hope to do the same next year and I expect I will. As you get older in the Japan the job gets easier and the salary rises.

I can't really say how kendo has affected the way I work because I have not studied it for that long. But from a general MA point of view (of which I have been in slightly longer than kendo), I find that I am kind and pleasent to all those I meet and I carry out work with (well more or less) the same amount of determination as I have with my MA studies.

Another IT bod Im afraid. Im currently Businness Develeopment Manager for Oracle 9iAS in the UK but before that mainly OO technology consultant (Java and Smalltalk) and before that an Academic

I wonder if IT people are drawn to the 'violent' aspect of kendo because of the work or the people at work, or the technology or whether IT peole are just a bit peculiar full stop ;-)

My dojo has a couple of IT people, skilled manual workers, a teacher, a couple of project managers and a necromancer (no im not kidding but his day job is running a bar) so id say we are a pretty inclusive bunch

For the benefit of ares2907 who probably ought to get out more ;-)

necromancer (noun) -
1. one who practices magic or sorcery
Synonyms: sorcerer, magician, wizard

Neil Gendzwill
12th March 2003, 03:39 AM
Hi, Phil. Necromancy has a further connotation of involving magic related to raising or communicating with the dead, usually for nefarious purposes. In short, anyone who tells you he's a necromancer is either yanking your chain, waaaay too much into whatever roleplaying game or in serious need of therapy.

nodachi
12th March 2003, 10:52 AM
I am not disrespecting the people who can actually talk to the dead or see the future. I know it sounds retarded, but I know of one person who was fairly accurate at foreseeing the future. Wasn't always perfect, but it was close enough to not be a coincidence. Sometimes these people are on the level.

However, yes, too many roleplaying games can rot the brain, and no disrespect intended, I was an RPG dork too.

As a career, will probably eventually go into investment banking or advertising/PR. Worked a summer job in Hong Kong at Morgan Stanley, and another one in Shanghai at China International Capital Corporation. Also got into a couple good law schools last year but turned them all down, realised I didn't want to be a lawyer when I actually met a whole bunch of law students (although, in contrast, I get along very well with practising lawyers around my parents age, they seem very different, might just be a generational thing).

Raiza
18th April 2003, 01:39 AM
Since I've seen some pretty stupid and/or illogical people at university, I'd have to say no to the argument that
university = logic = kendo-freak.
IMHO, it's more like
university = more recreational programs and facilities + lots o' stress to get rid of = kendo-freak

My university sensei encouraged us to use logical and rational thinking in our kendo, and I have to say we turned out pretty well. I heard someone say that Kyoto University is so successful for that reason.

If you got a whole bunch of young people together and the athletic department is supportive, you've got a really good beginner base. The sensei can just take it from there.

As for the non-IT people, you're not alone. I'm a toxicologist. IT people are more likely to use forums, that's all.

How has kendo affected my job?
1) I spend my breaks reading and posting on KWF.
2) I don't sweat the small stuff.
3) I act more decisively.
4) If asked to go to a conference out of town, I try to figure out if, when and where I can visit a dojo there.
5) People are less likely to try to boss me around when they find out what I do for fun. ;)

How has my job affected my kendo?
1) I try to use a rational approach with continuous refining.
2) I like the fact I'm a little blue after practise.
3) I can look up obscure kendo-related scientific research and understand what it means. What little there is in English...
4) I now have more time and money to do/get kendo stuff than I did at university. No more starving student lifestyle for me! Woohoo!

Hai_hai

Do I ever feel like a lamer. I'm in the profession that is too shameful to name (living off the avails of the Japanese government, eg: JET Programme). Really, I'll be honestly employed in the near future. Maybe.

I'm trained as a sociologist, but I'd wager that Alexwould argue that I'd make a better Nazi. Unfortunately, my career ambitions aren't in that direction. I'd like to work in correspondence journalism. Not exactly IT.

Raiza, you're absolutely right about university=logic=kendo-freak being a flawed argument. I blame it all on anime, manga and video games. It might make an interesting paper topic, however. Come to think of it, it would definately make an interesting paper topic.

Hey Ares, reread your last post, it is funny.

I just remember a joke, sorry if any one offend.

Arthur Davidson, of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation, died and went to heaven.

At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur, "Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have changed the world, your reward is that you can hang out with anyone you want in Heaven."

Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "Well, shoot, I want to hang out with God!"

So St. Peter took Arthur to the Throne Room, and introduced him to God.

Arthur then asked God, "Hey, aren't you the inventor of the woman?"

God said, "Ah, yes."

"Well," said Arthur, "Professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:

1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
2. It chatters constantly at high speeds.
3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust.
And finally,
5. The maintenance costs are outrageous."

"Hmmmm, you may have some good points there," replied God. "Hold on." God went over to his Celestial super computer, typed in a few words and waited for the results.

The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read it. "Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur, but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours.

Hong - it’s always nice to know the people benefiting from my tax dollars :)

I am a Jack of many trades in motion picture advertising: print production coordinator, ad trafficking, design etc. Right now we are between films and I am probably spending too much time here but soon there will be no rest. In the old days I worked on a drafting table now I am on a MAC - which I love but it forces me to constantly fight the dreaded disease “Mac-Ass”.

Working for the studios can make you want to hit someone with a stick. Kendo is a great stress reliever. I am too tired to care about petty crap afterward keiko and can sleep well.
Besides all that, I really enjoy the new friends, the physical & mental challenge and the healthy competition. Kendo helps to keep my mind/body/spirit healthy in a very unhealthy biz.

My co-workers often spend hours matching PMS color chips to my bruises.

I work for the City of Los Angeles library department. I'm a lackey/part time IT kid. I just graduated from college with a degree in telecommunications. Unfortunatly I cannot be a full time student anymore, so I will be a full time IT kid in a few months.

And how does kendo influence my job? I spend a lot of time doing research at work using our computers. So naturally I end up surfing a fair amount of the day. But I get to find out alot interesting kendo info and movie clips.

School is the major thing that cuts into my kendo. I miss alot of practices because of papers and studying.

Physician, endocrinologist and diabetes specialist. Like Old Warrior I come late to kendo from a European fencing background (foilist). Got tired of the politics of fencing in my division and several of my fencing friends were in the kendo club as well. Got drug over and here I am.

Use Carbon shinai, it is virtually indestructable.

Meng,

I can take you along to a test firing, but I'd have to kill you...

You have a choice. Be blown to bits with a missile or a kendo death match.

Several engineering degrees and a law degree. Since I write patents on software for a BIG software giant, you might consider me an IT guy. But I prefer writing patents on nanotechnology.

Like Old Warrior, the competition in Kendo and Brazilian Ju Jitsu allows me to keep tense legal moments in perspective. But I also used to design and run hazardous waste treatment systems and making sure everybody lived through the day was far more stressful than any legal situation I've ever been in.

I'm an engineer who hates IT alleged 'help desk' people.... yes I CAN switch a computer on, no I wouldnt ring you if the computer was working properly, due to your inadequate programming skills its gone wrong again and Ive lost half an hours work, the server needs essential maintenance during office hours is not an acceptable excuse, etc etc.. rant rant...
If you guys were engineers you'd be sacked by the end of the week. Which other group of designers would dare put out products and then ask the customer to see if it went wrong and offer to repair it later? Would you accept that for your car's brakes? hmmmm....

On a serious note my plant manager now thinks it a challenge to try and intimidate me, like he bullies his staff ( he's a little man with a big chip on his shoulder)... for some reason he gets upset when I just take it in my stride. IPPON to me I think! Also I am the only person in my office with good posture at my desk, the rest all complain of back problems...
