View Full Version : Custom Fitted Bogu vs. Standard Size

I have a question for anyone who has experience fitting bogu on taller (but not necessarily heavier) people. I am just starting out, so it will be some time before I need to buy, but I have been poking around the various online kendo stores and I am curious whether a store like Sehyun that only take measurements for the men and kote makes a do that will fit me. I am about 6’2.5” / 190cm and about 173lbs / 78kg and my torso is sort of long and lean; I’m worried that a one-size-fits-all Do that can be worn by someone 5’8” will look like a little bikini top on me. I’ve seen stores that offer “extra large bogu” that are usually for people 190cm+ and/or 200lbs+, but I’m thinking those might fit like a barrel on me. So, who’s got an opinion; is this going to be a problem and I should think about custom-fitted, or am I worrying about nothing. I’m particularly interested in what Atama, Jschmidt and anyone else who got their bogu from Sehyun has to say, and Neil G. because he seems to answer everyone’s questions around here. Thanks in advance

I'm overly chatty and I am waiting for a lot of compiles these days.

I'm kind of confused as to why some companies don't take doh measurements. Most companies offer at least 3 sizes of stock doh. The largest one available from our supplier fits up to 40 cm wide and 23.5 cm high. That 23.5 measurement is the height of the doh-dai along the centre-line (ie the height of the bamboo/fibreglass part not counting the mune).

As you're practicing in Vancouver you have the opportunity to see lots of bogu. Find one that fits and take the measurements. Also, your sensei should be able to help you with this stuff. Which dojo are you with?

I don't know if you'll need a bigger Do. I myself am 1,80m tall and I use a common do. Some Dojo mates of mine are even taller than me (1,85 to 1,90) and they also use 'average joe' Do without any problems.

But I'm not as picky as Neil is, so ..

Thanks for the responses guys. Neil, I'm training with the Vancouver Kendo Club, but this is literally my first week so I'm just starting to learn names.

If you're training with VKC just ask Mako for help. You should at least know who *she* is.
