I haven't had good sake, so I'll say no, I don't like it. That vodka with the plums in it is pretty cool, though (ume-shu). But, when it comes down to it, beer is the choice.

Sake is great, but only coupled with good and appropriate food. Don't pound it to get drunk. That's a waste. Use shochu, soju, or awamori for that. Cold and hot, I advise everyone try sake!
Advisory: Those underage should not drink alcoholic beverages. Not olny because it is illegal but also because your liver will pass out and DIE! It's true, google it.

I plan on drinking some sake when i get some..hmm... >_>.. what does it taste like? Does it taste like beer or something?

From what I've heard it's nothing like beer. It's a rice based alcohol rather than barley and such. I've tried a home made rice wine made by a Hmong friend of mine's mom and it wasn't too bad. My problem is that around where I am it's hard to find a store that keeps sake in stock. That and I'm underage by a bit more than a month so I'll just hint at my friends to get me a bottle for my birthday :D. Speaking of which, I've heard that there are different kinds of sake that have varying degrees of sweetness. What do you guys mostly prefer (hot or cold, please specify) and why?

though im not old enough to legally drink it, i think that its much better hot. i say that because not many alchoholic drinks taste good when they're hot.
gives it more of a unique taste?

It tastes like SAKE!
Even though it is a non-distilled grain-derived fermented drink, don't confuse it with traditional barley-malt beer. It's clear (excepting nigori-zake), strong alcoholic taste, and has a (choose one of many) flavor.
My favorite is, well, anything that doesn't come is a cardboard box! Sake is like wine. There are so many varieties it is hard to choose a favorite (although I do lean towards the junmaishu's). If you are living outside Japan, try a basic Gekkeikan or Shochikubai on ice (it works!). If you have access to local sake, or ji-zake, then try one everyday of the week. You will never stop exploring!
Excuse me, but I will pass out now (courtesy of Asahi Super-Dry).

ha ha. Thanks for the description. I'm currently in the middle of nowhere...i'm one of 2 or 3 asian people in a thirty mile radius, so sake isn't something you see a whole lot of out here.

I glupped one cup down two weeks ago, never too fond of alcohol, but it wasn't too bad. I like it warm. It tasted almost like rice wine, but ain't sake made out of rice? I just don't know much about alcohol, educate me please.

Hmm. Isn't there some sort of variety/multinational grocery store there? I know down here in good ole Ohio we have a nice place called "Jugle Jim's". They sell all sorts of things including--I guess--a bigger selection of sake. If you really want to taste it I'm sure one trip out of your radius would be worth it...but if you hate it, it'll all go to waste.
Personally, from what I've tasted (not drank, mind you) sake can have a pretty nice flavor if you have it when it's hot. When I tasted some cold, it just seemed stronger to me...maybe I'm just weak. But...whatever. It's nothing that'll make your kendo 300% better or anything or give you an epiphany on life, so I think a little wait wouldn't do you harm. I mean...it's not as though kids are hanging out at house parties passing around a nice hot cup of sake...so there's no peer pressure...around here at least.

Beer pressure, you mean (lol). No, i don't think there are any grocery stores around here that sell sake. There might be some in the city (almost an hour drive). Maybe the next time i'm down there i'll look around

That's because you lose alcohol content when you warm it! That's why I drink it cold.
Dewasansan is a good one. On the sweet side.
Oni Goroshi is also good, but mostly for drinking with lotus root chips and other fried stuff.
I'm also partial to Bishonen from Kumamoto. It's somewhere between Dewasansan and Oni Goroshi in terms of sweetness. Good with everything if you ask me.
Don't drink if you're underage. Underage drinking is sad because underage drinkers usually drink whatever they can get their hands on (e.g., Boone's Farm, Bud Light). Wait till you can drink legally so you can do it with some class.

I know what you mean. I don't drink anything excessively to the point of inebreation. But, I just wanted to put my input on things I've tasted. I don't want to end up like the kids I hate so much in my school. Frankly, I'm sick of hearing how wasted some kid got and I am a firm believer that, as you say, it is possible to drink with class. Until then, I can only talk about what it tasted like.

I've been in Japan for over a year, drink regularly, but had my first taste of sake since coming here only last night.
The reason: in southern Japan (Kyushu-where I live), shochu, a clear, distilled drink made from rice, barley, but most popular is sweet potato, called imo-jochu-is the drink of choice. It's considerably higher in alcohol content than sake (25-45%). Its similar to Korean soju, but people don't "shoot" it as Koreans do, but usually have it on the rocks or diluted with hot water.
In this area, beer is obligatory for kampai, but orders for shochu begin almost immediately. People say it doesn't stay in your system like sake, but I have had more than a few hangovers that felt like the universe was being sucked through my ears.
Shochu has become hugely popular in Japan, outselling sake nation-wide. They can't make enough of it to satisfy thirsty salarymen and office ladies in Tokyo and Osaka. The best shochu is made right in my "neighborhood", like being in France for wine-lovers.
Unfortunately, like most things in Japan, they keep the best for themselves, and very little is exported. Even the sake that is available in N. America, unless made locally, is nothing like what you would find here.
As for the hot/cold debate, sake is usually made to be served either hot OR cold, so if you spend dough on a good bottle, its worth knowing what type it is.
So bottoms up!
(under parental supervision-unless of legal age to get "blot-toed!")
Oh yeah, so why only last night? I was at the mayor's birthday party and he happens to like sake.

imo-jochu-is...is it slightly golden in colour. I got a bottle of Kyushu Shochu at home...its logo is a horse...ah...I like Kyushu...especially tonkatsu ramen...haha...there's a great ramen shop near kokura castle...the owner is still trying to kill me for running off everytime without for the extra egg I have with the ramen...

I'm not too excited about sake. First time I drank it (japanese restaurant in Vienna) I thought maybe the one I drank wasn't that good quality.
But then 'I did it again' (oops) ;) at a japanese festival here in Frankfurt where an importer had a booth where you could try like half a dozen different ones (including some, according to the importer 'high quality' stuff), and still didn't get convinced (conveniently numb though after going trough is entire product range).
Hefeweizen is my drink and red wine for special occasions.

Fermented steed milk. Central asian recipie. It's alkohol somewhere in there. If you drink enough, local lore sais you'll reach 100 years.
I think I steer clear of it, risking to die at 99 (like my great-grandfather). :o

I'm pretty sure it's different, since it's given to the "minor" by a parent/legal guardian, and the person has to remain under the parent/legal guardian's direct supervision in their home. I could be wrong, though. I have never had anyone in the local law system tell me that it was illegal, but I will ask and get back to you on this one.

I've tried both cold and hot sake. I like them both and in different ways. But everytime I can't drink too much because I will not know whether I have enough till I stand up. Just had dinner with some team mates and sensei, we went to a Korean restaurant and had Seol Joong Mae for drinks. It is almost like Umeshu, but the plum wasn't fully marinated with the alcohol. But I still like it although I would prefer Umeshu.

I havent really found a market where I could buy good sake, but all the jappanesse restaurants/sushi bars carry ample amounts. Normally I prefer warm sake, thats not too sweet. Sweetnes tends to mask the liqueur taste and slightly warm sake makes it smooth and easy to shot down

16 REASONS WHY ALCOHOL SHOULD BE SERVED AT WORK...
1. It's an incentive to show up.
2. It leads to more honest communications.
3. It reduces complaints about low pay.
4. Employees tell management what they think, not what they want to hear.
5. It encourages car pooling.
6. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don't care.
7. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.
8. It makes fellow employees look better.
9. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.
10. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are wasted.
11. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.
12. Employees work later since there's no longer a need to relax at the bar.
13. It makes everyone more open with their ideas.
14. Eliminates the need for employees to get drunk on their lunch break.
15. Employees no longer need coffee to sober up.
16. Sitting "Bare ass" on the copy machine will no longer be seen as gross.
Take a beer and send the truck to all of your friends!!!!!!

However, I must be careful around my house.... If my sister gets her hands on it she'll drink it all.... for god's sake she drinks it as if it's water! >o<
PS - Also, what is the deal with Ama-sake? I hear that it is non-alcholic. If so where can I buy it? Also, How much is it? (Sake here is $7/ bottle)
PS - Does anyone here collect sake cups?
