I've finally put up my quick kendo site. It's still on a temporary host so there's not a whole lot on the page...yet :) I mainly use it at the moment to show the designs I've made for the new tenguis that my club is ordering. I will hopefully be adding some articles and maybe a blog about my experiences with kendo. If you're curious, feel free to take a peek :)

Do you spell it tenegui, tenugui, or tengui?? *is confused at that*

and it's spelt ROMAJI no u

Paburo

haha, no no. my sensei taught me to write it like this ローマジ

"...unfamiliar with the complicated rules for lengthening Japanese vowels in differing rmaji systems, follow the example of native speakers and lengthen the "o" with a "u" using the rules of kana (the Japanese phonetic syllabaries)..."

"If past precedent is any guide, neither the ISO nor anyone else should hold their breaths. Anarchy is likely to reign for a long time to come. Instead, it might be an idea for those with an abiding interest in Japan to learn that 途ōmaji (the use of Latin letters to write Japanese) can be spelled as 途oumaji, 途oomazi, 途oomadi and any number of other variations." (http://weblog.delacour.net/archives/000840.html)

though if you're also a nihongo sensei, i'll reconsider writing it your way :]

p.s. sorry all of you for the long post but the spell checker user i-won't-name needs updating :D :D

Sinta,

Very nice work on all three.
I really like the sakura. Seems more "serene" to me, if you know what I mean.
All in all though, some nice artwork.

Sinta, do you know how much it cost to order custom Tenugui?
And the minimum quantity that can be ordered?

Centre..

Sinta, nice designs. Some technical tips for designing tenugui:

1) The ratio of the tenugui's shape is about 1:3 ( ie, a very long rectangle)

2) Be careful of detailed line work and grey tones. Usually these can't be duplicated in Japanese tenugui because they use a different printing process (hence the image coming out both sides). If you want a WYSIWYG result in terms of your original design going onto the tenegui, better to use a local silkscreen printer. This means though, that you're image will only be printed on one side.

3) More than one colour becomes VERY expensive.

good luck!

Thanks Ryukyu ^_^ At first I didn't think a flower motif would suit the tengui seeing it is a rather powerful budo, but then my sempai convinced me that one who practices kendo, must be able to find the beauty of a simple flower ^_^ So I made one. Thanks for the compliment.

Um, to be honest I'm not sure -_- The club is going to order it and my sempai (who is the president) simply asked me to make some designs that the club could use :) You can ask in Tozando.com though. That's where we're ordering it from.

Thanks for the tips :).

1.)I know about the tenugui's shape. What I placed up is just the area with the designs. Not to be the actual size. Just imagine that design on the center of the tengui :) i didn't want to take up so much space on the page.

2.)Hrm, I've never thought of the consequences of detailed lines and grey tones. I just made the designs for the club to use. No one gave me any specifications. I think I better tell my sempai about what you've said. I have no idea what the process of printing in Japan is -_-

3.) LOL I know.. *twiddles thumbs* I hope I haven't overdone it. My sempai hasn't complained yet. -_-

Thanks again!

Sinta,

I found his on the Cornell University Kendo Club page.
There's a link there labeled "Why Flowers".

"The cherry blossom is admired for representing the soul of the samurai. It is fully appreciated when it falls; it symbolizes the determination of the samurai who will not hesitate to sacrifice his life when necessary. As a result, the beauty of the cherry blossom is tinged with the scent of blood. "

The sakura obviously has a deeper meaning than just being a "girl" flower.
That design still gets my vote as the nicest design.

The cherry blossom, or sakura, represents death. Or more specifically, a short and glorious life. This is what the Japanese still celebrate every spring in the short 2 weeks or so during which the flowers are at their peek. That is part of how the samurai viewed their life and service, in fact the word samurai means one who serves, a vassal or servant.
Like the sakura, our life may be very short, and so all we can do is hope and strive to make our life as glorious, as wonderful as that small flower does in its short span.
There is nothing "girly" about sakura here.

Ryukyu & kendomushi

That's some heavy stuff :) Do you mind if I put your posts on the main page of my Quick Kendo Page? Not many in my club actually want the flower one, so maybe it can change their mind? Of course your Forum names (unless you want to be named) will be placed with your posts :)

What you wrote is quite interesting and I think it's an element that might be missing in my club. I only know a few who look at the sakura in a different way. The others just say "girly flowers" ;) heheheh.

Sinta, I also vote for the sakura-motif tenegui (BTW, it's true that the 2 "e" spelling is the usual way that it's shown in romaji).
It's a little surprising to hear that more members of your club didn't go for it - as has been pointed out, the sakura has long been symbolically associated with the samurai and it's a real shibui (shibui=dignified understatement)element to use.
Gambatte ne. :)

Actually, please credit the Cornell University Kendo Club instead of me.
While I agree with what it says, I didn't come up with it. It's really their words.

Sinta,

Has your club come to any conclusion about which design they will use?

Just curious to see what the majority consensus is.

LOL Thanks for reminding me ^_^We've decided on the Sakura. (it seems it's been the favourite of many who came and visit) and to the members who were a bit against it, they've become interested in the meaning of the flower to kendo. (I still have to post that article -_-)

The dragon on the other hand, will become a club logo. I'll still have to make a few alterations on it though. I believe what we need is a blue dragon, because it's the symbol of the East (if I remember right.) And we're a kendo club in the East of Switzerland :) makes sense.

I'll be posting possible logos on the page soon ^_^ *gets on scribbling*

Hi Sinta,

Thanks for the update!!
I'm glad to hear that your club has chosen to use the sakura. I definitely think it was the most elegant choice, and it was a very nice rendering.
My compliments to you and your club!!
