If I do it I'll force him to use a goshin-ken (Those padded Chanbara swords)

Who cares? Get out and practice in the dojo, eat, have fun with girls, watch cool movies, study. There are a great deal more important things in life then shutting some monkey up just to satisfy an ego.

On the bright side of things I might be having 2 of the students join the dojo ^o^
I also found our dojo on Saruta Mitsuhiro's site. (http://www2.odn.ne.jp/ryuseiken/usa/index.htm)
Also, the girl that was supporting me is very cute #^o^#. Mabie I should ask her out sometime (same person who wants to join the Dojo ^o^)

Sorry about the double post..., hit the post button accidently on the first one...and editing took more than 5 minutes to write this.
Anyway, the story. I used to live in an area with no kendo dojos. The closest thing was a taekwondo dojo about 45 minutes away (driving, on the highway). Anyway, I decided to look around my school for people that might be able to teach me kendo. Found someone, one of my workout buddies, turns out. Before teaching me he asked "have you ever taken kendo before" and about an hour later "have you ever seen ruruoni kenshin". I said no to both (was completely honest).
"Kendo" lessons were...odd. The guys stances were odd, his footwork and timing were off...but I didn't say anything. A month or so later, I decided to go to the bookstore and add a few ruruoni kenshins to my manga collection. Open them up and "Hey! doesn't this look familiar!" Thats right. They guy had taugh himself kendo by reading ruruoni kenshin. Worse, he was teaching other people "kendo"..I wasn't the only person he taught.
Along with "kendo", had also taught MA after school (taekwondo, caporiea, and jeet kun do?). I asked to spar with him (MA, not kendo). Being the overconfident person he was, he accepted. It was pathetic. I was wiping the gym with him, and wasn't even trying very hard. At first, he tried caporiea. He did this weird movement back and forth (jenga?) which was slow, and left him very wide open and in an awkward position. Then Jeet kun do. Not any better. Finally, taekwondo....I'm not going into details, but he lost very badly, and somehow injuried his right hand in the process. After that, he stopped teaching his crap to other people. Shame. He was planning on opening a brilliant McDojo one of these days......
Soo...my answer would be...its up to you. If you do spar with the guy, its possible he'll be like my former instructor. Note: he won't be fighting by the offical kendo rules...he'll probably just swing the sword around where ever the hell he wants.

I've never had anyone laugh at me because of JSA. (Lots of other things but not JSA)
It's just my cool hobby, and everyone has a weird hobby. I know people who do the model train thing, another guy who raises flowers for shows, pottery, whatever floats your boat.
I invite everyone out to the dojo when they give me a strange look, sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't.

That is a real gem right there. My Mom used to tell me something very similar when I was younger. Whenever I complained about what others were doing or saying she would ask the dreaded "questions" ... Do they pay for your groceries? Can they throw you out of your home and into the street? No? Then anything they have to say is irrelevant to your life unless you choose to give them relevancy!
Yep, my Mum is a strange old bird, but she's pretty darn smart! :)

Worrying about what other people think about you is just going to cause more problems (ex anxiety). Don't let other peoples opinions bother you. Think of it this way: once you graduate from high school you'll never have to see any of them again (provided you all go to different colleges).

I have never had people make fun of me for studying kendo, but I have had people kind of give me a funny look. I know this is not entirely accurate, but if you ask if they know European fencing, they will say yes. Then you just say that it is like Japanese fencing and it describes it in very general terms, but makes it hard for people to poke fun back.
I had some students who thought it was wierd when I described it to them so I downloaded some of the All Japan's shiai and played them on the TV. Seeing a stadium environment filled with people watching such quality matches really helped to give my students a dose of culture, realize it was a very serious thing, and some seemed really interested.

I think you got some plain'ol good, "safe" advise. who knew there were so many civilized kendoka. however, civilization isn't natural. complete savegery isn't natural either, by no means (there wouldn't be anyone alive!). My point is people would think twice about being rude, if they thought they would get their skull thumped for it.
as far as honor goes, I can't get that deep, too complicated. I'ts really up to you. Honor, simply put, is your reputation. Its getting recoqnized or HONORED for your deeds. its your "name" or the name of whom you serve (family boss whatever). If putting your face down on this one gives you shame, then you do have, and care about your honor. If honor is what drives you, think of it this way; If ten years from now when you look back at this chapter of your life, and think you're going to feel ashamed and regrettful for your decision, then by all means fight. if you are like some that dont care what people think of them in situations like this. then there is no honor to defend (or fight for) dont do it. oh and about calling the police. It would depend on the individual (unless you are a woman). if its an elder of yours like a teacher or something of that nature, or a fat bitter woman who expects you to take it and never retalliate, someone you dont want to hurt ect, then the police would be an effective mesure. but if its a real scumbag, this might be the fastest way of getting yourself seriously hurt or buried. and you might put your friends or family in danger. (if they know where you live, or hang out with). its best to just put yourself in danger.
Myself I take a much simpler approach. If I feel I or the people close to me are in danger, either immediate of delayed, there is no other option but to fight. if not, (maybe because I dont see them as a threat) then I dont. If they look at you ugly then maybe they're just ugly and thats how they look! (cant expect them to look pretty can you?).
one more thing... dont fight for a girl if shes not your wife. and dont try to protec the " small & the weak" its useless (unless you care deeply for them). almost every fight I had was defending the "small and the weak" that get taken advantage of (how sad :(). they are nausiating, sickening, pieces of scum. when the buddies of the person I hurt protecting these poeple, would come after me (and they always do, these cowards always travel in packs), the universal answer I got from "small&weak" in response to my advise of "lets go get ready" was: "I did'nt ask you to fight for me". oh and it is universal it trancends religion, race, and age. well not actually, the people who OFFERED (whitout me asking mind you), were a girl and a 13yo. useless but I gave them an "A" for effort! what this says about men in our "civilized" society nowadays, its something in my opinion, to be lamented. I can only hope this phenomenon is strictly localized in the area I live in. I not we are doomed.
and for all the smart folk that are gonna come around saying "you think you are superman lol"... NO I am human, I won alot of fights and I lost alot of fights. and I dont fight allthe time, its been years. seems the bigger you get and the older and more serious you get, the less you fight. scumbags only target the weak. a man wont fight another man if he thinks he can't beat him. these grown ass men would rather gang up on a kid who just reached his teens. then risk getting a cut or a bruise.

There was a thread in the flames section about a tv episode on some show, about a girl getting raped in the subway in front of other passengers. this show as loosely as it might have been, was based on a real story that happened years ago. and similar stories can be found on the news today, and friends and first hand as well . If these people were more like the type of people that say "lets go get ready" and less like the type that say with a quiver in their voice "I didn't ask you to help me", we wouldnt hear so many of these stories!

I've got to comment that I think you are confusing honor and pride. Honor is in how you do things and live your life. Pride is how you wish others to see you. A man of honor doesn't care how others see him.

Ethics friend (your set of moral principels), and values. are the way you lead your life, beggining sience you are a child and acquire recognition of yourself. not honor. unless you choose to of course.
Honor is just a poetic way of saying "Reputation". Pride is sometimes used to mean (mistakenly in my opinion) that pricky feeling you get, when your reputation or honor, is at stake. example: I can't do THAT I have pride! = I cant do THAT I have a reputation! "Pride" is simply the satisfaction you get from certian things. like your son doing well in school. having a shiny fast car. Or the satisfaction of a job well done, including a the creation of a good reputation.
NO. sience there are no royal courts here. most likely a man who is considered to have honor would be a wealthy man, a celebrity, and most recently a firefighter or a police officer, they cant have the reputation of their professions damaged. a man without much money working a meanial job farmer, waitor, food service, a criminal is considered by most to have little or no honor, or reputation to uphold. So no, a man that doesnt care how others see him, is not an honorable man. he is either a sorry excuse for one, or a "brave" one, and with a higher degree of freedom I might add.
To uphold your reputation is both good and desirable. remember, we must be judged by our peers. don't buy into that "only god can judge me bull$hit". do not think of yourself as so mighty, and above human that only the supreme divine being of all that exists himself can cast judgement upon you. for though you will be more free, you will also be less happy. if no one would judge us there would be even more accounts of your deadly sins adultery, geed, glutony, lust ect. not to mention vices like alcohol drugs, gambling. wait..... where I am at its full of ambitous, obese, horny people who place money before all, and practiacally they all booze and divorce their partners, usually after one of them slept wilth someone else. come to think of it there is also more, serial killings, and the ultimate crime of them all sexual child abuse (these guys are just poping out of the woodwork in the last decade). could it be the romanticised mentallity of being "free" and having only god judge you, contributes to this. could be ...... hell it could also be gnomes in yellow boots for all I know! (only the yellow ones though, they are the worst)
are you kidding me a samurai or high official couln't be seen tilling the land, what OUTRAGE! THEY were the SUPERIOR! class. they had to uphold their HONOR!
see?:)
OH and by the way I am atheist (dont believe in god) the beliefs, rules, "commandments" (not to be confused with rituals) are very respectable I think. although some were stressed more, clearly for political reasons.

You bring up some pretty interesting ways of defining honor and pride. However, I'm going to have to agree with Smith-san on this. You say someone with wealth would be considered honorable. Not necessarily...Perhaps if the man became wealthy by respectable means. Just because you're rich, doesn't mean you're honorable. Those who ruin others' businesses to get a .1% rise in profit by negative advertising strategies or raising some kind of scandal aren't honorable.
Perhaps I'm in in the minority since I can see those that hold a lesser job than a CEO as honorable. The waiter for instance could be working to get money to get him/herself into college. And as for samurai, if they were ordered for some reason to till some land by their daimyo, then I'd bet they'd be out there tilling for all they're worth. However, I can say that some people do let their wealth get to their heads and make them think that they're unable to perform physical labour for some strange reason. As for the rest of us, I believe sticking to righteous convictions and doing what one believes to be right could make one honorable which in turn should give them pride. It is, as you said in your post, more of a feeling you get when something is accomplished or something allows you to feel fulfilled in a sense.
Enough of my ramblings...I haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd make it long.

Aquilonian,
You are still quite confused. It gets easier as you gain experience though. It is really very common for the young to confuse honor and pride. A man's honor is a personal thing. Other's may honor him, but that's a verb, not a noun.
Here are the definitions that I try to live my life by. Courtesy of Merriam-Webster ...
HONOR
8 a : a keen sense of ethical conduct : INTEGRITY (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/integrity) b : one's word given as a guarantee of performance
PRIDE
1 : the quality or state of being proud: as a : inordinate self-esteem : CONCEIT (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/conceit)
2 : proud or disdainful behavior or treatment : DISDAIN (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/disdain)
To uphold your reputation is both good and desirable. remember, we must be judged by our peers.
You might have to be judged by your peers, I must be judged by myself. Your ideas are what led to horrors such as the holocaust. If your peers decide that something morally wrong is desirable, you will agree with them because what they think about you matters. After all, upholding your reputation with them is both good and desireable right? This makes you a sheep my friend. I prefer to be a wolf. :)

Yeah honour as in the 'saving-face, screw my daughter and I'll blow your head off, what you say about my momma?' reputation kind of honour is one thing.
At the same time, nowadays honour could be described as sticking to your beliefs and doing whats right rather than whats easy. That spans all levels of percieved social status really, IMHO.

I know you're being facetious here but in theory the farmers were more important as they were the ones producing the food for the nation. Shi-no-ko-sho and all that jazz. And some samurai actually farmed before Hideyoshi made them choose one or the other.

OK grasshopper, here's my tirade of sage like wisdeom, heed it well, or claim it's bullshit, up to you pal...
Are you sure about the dojo? That can get a little repetitive for newcomers after a while. Tread carefully.
Good plan on the clothes, don't pick her up, meet her there, and go halves. Can't be too eager. Unless she lives miles away and is extremely poor, from you, these things just telegraph neediness. Supplication Is Not Good. But other than that, you're big, well medium pimpin spendin cheese etc.
Regarding getting physical in the cinema, do it if you feel comfortable, otherwise not. If you're nervous then it will seem creepy to her. If it feels natural and not 'out of the blue' then it will be AOK. You can only get away with hitting on her if she already likes you.
And seriously, you could really make the hakama/cowboy hat thing work for you.

Some girls think it's patriarchal if you pay for them and some think it's rude if you don't. Anyway, if you pay halves and it doesn't work out you'll only be half poorer

Ok, here's the revised plan:
1. Watch AT LEAST 3 James Bond movies. ( Goldeneye to the present don't count)
2. Buy a tuxedo
3. Practice your pick-up lines (ie, Hey baby, did you fall out of heaven? That would explain how you messed up your face)
4. Don't go to the movies. Thats boring.
5. Go to a shooting range or a race track. (The ladies dig that stuff especially if there is a lot of crashing at the track)
6. After that, hop into your Geo storm and drive up to the nearest Taco bell for a nice dinner. (Gentleman always pays of course)
7. Sit under that starlight sky and tell her how your big toe got infected last week because you dropped a hammer on it and only cried for 30 minutes. (Ladies are suckers for manly-men)
8. Drive her home (after meeting your friend in a Wall-mart parking lot to pick up your fake I.D. and escaping from the cops)
9. If she doesn't give you a kiss, throw a temper tantrum.

Ok, here's the revised plan:
1. Watch AT LEAST 3 James Bond movies. ( Goldeneye to the present don't count)
Ah, the new James Bond films. The old Bond once said the Winsdsor knot is the mark of a cad and now Pierce Brosnan wears a windsor knot.

Perhaps I'm in in the minority since I can see those that hold a lesser job than a CEO as honorable. The waiter for instance could be working to get money to get him/herself into college.............................
Enough of my ramblings...I haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd make it long.
you would be in the minority andou. in this country, specially in the coasts, being a successful businessman is the epitome of success. look around you. if you have money and or status, your opinions actually count. you can say no wrong. If you are broke no one wil listen to you because youare a dumb SOB.
when a girl sees a fat balding man without money: eww what a pig!
a nicely dressed fat balding man driving a nice car : oh look at the little rolly polly. inst he cute?
If you see a regular drinking a beer: look at that drunk! bah!
if you see a guy drinking an expensive bottle of alcohol: Oh no, no. HE is a connoisseur. a real man of taste.
ect ect. ect. the less you work for your money, the better you are looked upon. the best is making money from the work of others. (as for me, these people also disgust me. but you can argue its, because I am not rich myself)
oh and ramble all you want. why not?

Aquilonian,
You are still quite confused.
in your definition of honor, you should have read the first 7. and your last ones clearly says "ETHICAL CONDUCT". Again, ethics friend (your set of moral principles) and values are the way you live, or conduct your life. not honor. unless you choose to of course. as far your definition of pride yes its self steem, your self worth due to your achievements, possesions, qualities ect. including the creation of a good reputation. I won't insult anyone by quoting the dictionary.
oh and about it getting easyer with age. my friends assure me (and they are a bit older than you) that you get more confused, you just stop caring. also I have noticed they get more sly, they become more cunning and more ready to take advantage of a situation or person.
Honor has just been gloryfied, by early on by poets. and most recentlythe place where they hang out (not starbucks) Hollywood (the movie industry). and of course the samurai. a samurai did fight for reputation. because a desirable reputation determined his and his family's status, wich translated into what type of living they would have. It was a means to an end. No Bushi ever came from the farmer class, ever. They were bred from Bushi stock. why you ask? to have a good reputation, sorry Honor. so it was honor honor honor, thats why men who could care less about theilr reputaion were also turned into heroes. the most redundant of these tales is the tale of miyamoto mushashi, who later did attain a goog reputation he was just misunderstood waaaaa. because honor really does count. (see even then they played the james dean approach).
you argue about judge ment. Fine I will give you my simplest view of that. (although you could write volumes on it) some reputation is both desirable and good. yes I believe it is. I dont care much either, but I do want badly to be of some use and set an example to the people around me. therefore I want to be honorable to them (having a good reputation in their eyes), thats why you wont catch me being a whore or booze monger. but it should be taken like you would place the importance of matters in your personal life. from the inside out.
FIRST: worry about and judge yourself first (a scumbag is of no use to anyone)
TWO: worry about and judge your family (a family of scumbags is of no use to anyone)
THREE: worry about and judge you neighbors (a scumbag in your neighborhood is of more importance than a scumbag on another city)
FOUR: worry about and judge your city (your city is of more immediate importance than your state.)
FIVE: state
SIX: COUNTRY
SEVEN: continent
eight : the world
thing is most people will rather worry and blame (part of judging) their country first, and themselves last. so yes I AGREE WITH YOU there, well met, I too would rather be a wolf. please no more, we are just different.

Friend gave my a funny little pin the other day with this really cute laughing bunny on it. It read, "I love boys. They're stupid." I found it kinda sexist, but it was still cute and gave me a laugh.
Just thought I'd throw that in here since the thread name is "Stupidity."

It's 'it's that simple' not 'as their symbol'. Chinese accent.
And Charuzu, every rejection is just another brick in your palace. To me a guy who's been rejected by girls 100 times IN THE REAL WORLD is way cooler than some freak who plays MMORPG's all day and runs his social life through livejournal and doesn't even try to get with girls in real life. Just learn from it, NEXT this girl and move on.
Mad props.

PS - She is willing to be friends. I wonder If I have any hope with that. But then again I doubt it.
In edition I had a online relation and mutualy decided to end it. Uggggg.... what was I thinking. She was a cute 1-kyu nihonjin too. But then again she had someone (the online one) ask her out this I guess it better not having the online relationship with her (Thus she can be with someone in person).

The teenage ego tends to be quite fragile. Rejection and failure is how you strengthen yourself and learn to improve. Without failure, there's no improvement. Every time you fail, it is an opportunity to learn and grow. Without growth, we're useless.
The strongest and most capable, as well as the happiest, people that I know have worked their way out of many failures in their lives. Those that I know that are most unhappy and dissatisfied with their lives were over-protected when young and learned to blame others when they failed, so they did not learn from their mistakes.
Welcome rejection and failure as the learning opportunities that they truly are.

Your spelling is atrocious. Duel is a bout between two people. Dual is a word that tells you there are two things involved.
