Anyone out there train with/know someone who uses antique/vintage bogu? Perhaps a Meji era Do or something of that nature? I ask after seeing a very old and beautiful bamboo child's Do at a tournament a few months back. I was going to post this under history - but I am looking for bogu that is in use. Lets see some pictures if you got em! This wouldn't be RBSO - more like OldSchoolShowOff? I love the idea of a piece of history being put to use.

Are you talking about Braxton's do?

I dunno - maybe. Is braxton around 10 with an un-laquered and well used bamboo do? I have seen it at several testings and tournaments. Looks great.

Are you sure it's an 'antique' do? Some manufacturers have unlaquered 'old school style' available for do.

I think it looks nice, too - maybe that comes from over-exposition to antique stuff. Mom's got a antique-addiction so our house looks like a museum and no piece of furniture is younger than 50 years :)
If I had a bugo that was actually that old, I wouldn't use it. If my significant other wasn't annoyed enough by my current kendo related stuff littering our appartment already ('get your frigging gi out of the bath tub, it does NOT look cool hanging there to dry' ^-^ :D ), i'd put it in a nice display box and admire it.
Sounds like such a waste, since you can never reapair that old stuff to a 'original' level and the danger of serious damage seems too high.
If one of those bamboo staves broke, you'd have to replace it with a new one that wouldn't fit the rest very well.

You can type 'kendo' in ebay, and you may get pics of pre-war kendo bogu. I saw the men and do on ebay, but thats been at least 3months

i use a bogu that's so old(bought cheap from the dojo, donated by japanese sensei long ago)... i think it belonged to several generations of japanese :D
the tare looks 25+ years old at least(older than me!) and my dojo mates say it belonged to musashi in joke.... does that count? :D :D

I think he was still wearing the un-lacquered do at the 50th Anniversary.

I wouldn't feel right about using a bogu from the Meiji era. Something like that should be in a museum, not battered in a dojo.

I feel your pain brother. I got a hard time for soaking my new cotton GI & Hakama in the bath & leaving a really nice Indigo Blue ring around the tub - which took me ages to scrub off. Not to mention having blue hands for a few days......All part of the Kendo experiance I suppose.:cheerful:
If I was lucky enough to have a vintage set of Bogu, I would build a display stand for it to reside upon and treasure it in respect of all the hours of practice, learning & sweat it has endured.

I use this one :

It is quite strong so it does not have to be handled with much care...
I also have a complete kendo set from Meiji, but it's a kid set...
Cannot even put the Do on :silly:

The futon is Tezashi, and the stitch wider than 3 BU.
The kawa pattern on the do
the way the tare is fixed on the do
kote shape
--> should be a real one, or if it is a fake, it is fucking well done
about the kanji, it is hard to read, but they are only numbers from 1 to 26...

The individual bamboo slats are just numbered 1 through 26, right to left. That's all the kanji written on it means.

There is nothing about this set that looks antique. My guess is that it is from the 80's. Certainly not 100 years old.

They're just numbers written in kanji.
