When their sensei thinks they have gotten to a point where their basics are good enough to do this.
I started kendo in februari then in september I got in bogu except for the men and today at the central practise my sensei told me that next tuesday I'll be wearing bogu the first time.
I'm really excited how ji-geiko will be.

Pretty much depends on the dojo. I know that some do it peice by peice only allowing one peice to be worn and then adding another with time. In our dojo, we have to get the ok to wear bogu and we wear all of it at once. In my case, I was 3 months into it when i was allowed to wear bogu.

i have been in kendo for 3 months, last class i came downstairs (were the locker rooms are) and my sempai said i was ready, he let me were all of his armor, except the men (didn't fit) and i get to wear one once i buy my own, or someone who has one that will fit me lets me borrow it.

When I started Kendo back in the 80's it was about two years, now it's 6 Months to a year

At least 6 months to 2 years .
Here's a piece of advice though, try to avoid getting your bogu as much as you can. Why? its better to perfect your basics and then go into bogu, rather then sloppy basics, which will lead to sloppy kendo .

I waited until my sensi said these imortal words to me "why havent you got any fucking armour yet" and then complained every lesson untli it came. when it turned up my sense broke me in. and the rest of the group (minus one) showed me what it is like to get my ass handed to me.

I think most sensei will want you to wait until:
A) you are sure you're going to stick with it before you make a big investment.
B) they are confident enough that you have the basics down that they don't need to watch your form as closely.

at our dojo it's pretty fast. i got mine after about 7 weeks. most people get it around 2-3 months usually. not that I'm better or anything, just more impatient:P
so far, it's going okay, so I don't know if maybe later it will show that my basics are not as good as others, but so far so good.

Also depends on your health also. If you have asthma or any health conditions might delay you to get into bogu. The guys who started a month later or the same time as me are already in bogu because they don't have a hard time breathing like me and they're stronger. Or if you really slobby and all you want is to get in bogu, which your sensei will notice and will never put you in it. Just remember you have to work hard to be in it, that's at least how I look at it.

It took me three months before my sensei told me to use the bogu for the first time. Because I've been absent from kendo for around a year and have started again without a bogu, I won't be surprised if it takes me another three months again.
