I haven't been on here in quite some time. School is killing me right now! ACTs and a 10 page research paper really take it out of you. Bleh. I'm back now though. (Please, hold your applause).
Anyhow,
Woo! I went to my first Kendo tournament this past weekend. I have applied to the Universty of Toronto, and needed to go tour the campus anyways. I just happened to schedule it the same weekend as the tournament..... ;)
So...On Sunday I got up early and came over. The matches had already started! Wow, the gym was crowded. I think I overheard that 200+ people were there. It seemed like quite a turnout.
Also...I got to meet (Kendoka)Max, Alex(M), and the rest of the McGill crew, along with the JCCC and UofT folks.
Sad to say, my parents forced me to go see a play. I couldn't stay to watch the end, or to see max's match. I left right after Alex lost in a close match...sorry man!
So, can somebody let me know what I missed at the end? Also I heard something about a speech at the beginning...anyone have info on this?
Thanks.

Phorest,
That was not a close match. I got beaten good (two fine men's by my opponent, no chance for me, I was fighting asleep). One gets used to losing. Anyway, I'm now worried that you know how lousy my kendo is..... Please don't tell anyone. Max lost a close match. I on the other hand got my ass handed back to me (I won my only match in teams though).
You din't miss anything at the end except a really good team match between U of Waterloo and Etobicoke. Those guys are good. The problem is most tourneys start with Mudansha and 1-2 dan. They then move on to 3rd dan and up category (which you missed). Those are the good matches.
Nice meeting you. Hope to see you at the JCCC tourney in November.

I'm also hoping that the JCCC people put up some footage and/or pictures!
I was sitting right in front of them while they were filming so...maybe I'm on there! :p

i was there. The only non-Jung Kho (spelling) kendoka in the white and black hakama.
I lost both my matches due to my stupidity.... i walked out of the ring and gave up a point to both my opponents. One during encho in the individuals, and once in the team ippon shobu matches.

Don't feel bad Steve: The courts were ludicrously small. We lost our team match because someone walked out of bounds twice.
I'm glad I saw the shinpan give penalties to people who tried to do nothing but push out of bounds (in one case someone got two hansoku in a row for attempting to knock someone out of bounds).

Yeah...it seemed like there was a large showing of Kumdo folks. Looked like they were doing fairly well in singles, what happened with their team?
You guys still haven't told me who won, what the speech was about, etc etc. I need details!

1st place in kyu went to this kid called Fortier, his kendo ain't to bad... :D 2nd place went to the youngest Hao (K. Hao I think)
1st place in team went to Etobicoke (with 3 girls, one of which is 16 years old, on the team). 2nd place went to U of Waterloo (who's team included C.Hao). One of the 3rd places went to Jung Ko (of the white kumdo outfits)
1st place in 3rd dan and up went to the elder Hao (H. Hao I think). I liked his kendo. Sort of curious as to why he isn't on team Canada.
1st place in 1rst-2nd dan went to..... I can't remember.
Speeches in kendo are basically: Thank you for coming, fight well, so glad there are so many more of you this year, etc. Nothing in terms of life-altering speeches.

I don't think he tried out. Here's the round-robin results for Ontario: http://www.kendo-canada.com/teamcanada/central_rr_results.html

I hate this kid (not really). A freaking teenager who trounces me constantly (remember Halifax?). And yet still he persists in thinking his kendo is bad. BTW, did anyone score a point on you in kyu division? Anyone?
At least we know that your kendo skills won't go to your head...They better not anyway. :D

Ah this is not true! Alex always beats me up in Keiko Thursday night! Halifax was just lucky the men was aiuchi and Mariko Kamata scored a hiki do on me (Wow sooo fast!). Alex played well at U of T also he is just too modest.

I forgot to metion! I have a great excuse for not doing well at U of T. I was breaking in a new bogu! Yeah, that's it. Too stiff still. I don't expect it to be properly broken into until at least..... whenever they hold a tournament in which I can win.

I don't think winning by knocking somebody out of bounds is "dumb"...its part of the game. Part of dealing with your opponent is to keep an advantage over him. In "the old days" this included taking advantage of terrain. The ring boundary is the modern acknowledgement of this fact; if you lose sense of where you are you could have bneen killed, no we give a penalty for it.
Although its still frustrating when you do it 4 times in two matches!!! GAAAAAAAH! And i had just finished telling one of our team mates (his first tourney) to watch were he is in the ring. and always be aware of the boundary. sheesh!
PS: Antoine, your kendo does not suck....not in the least. ;)

yeah.. i know all that.. and winning is winning
but you dont get satisfaction of ippon :P
Neil Gendzwill
29th March 2003, 04:04 AM
It's part of the rules and both sides need to be aware of it but... winning or losing by jogai sucks. I don't like to win that way and I sure as hell don't like to lose that way.

the courts were very small!
and main judge was so into the court that it gived the sensation of an even smaller court.
saki_wooah
29th March 2003, 07:03 AM
In a real life situation, a court would be a cliff. If you go off bounds, you fall and die,and your opponent wins.
Neil Gendzwill
29th March 2003, 07:44 AM
Nice way of thinking about it but how often do you fight with a cliff on all sides, where you get killed if you fall off twice?
AlexM
29th March 2003, 07:58 AM
Cliffs. Right, because so many battles took place on top of really small plateaus where the fall would only kill you if you did so twice (actually four times)..... Give this argument a rest.
Kendo is not sumo. You want to do sumo then buy a diaper and lose the shinai (I should talk...)
The Hao who won in 3rd dan and up was actually another K.Hao (not Koji, the other one). My mistake. You'd think a sensei would consider what was going to be written on a zekken and give each of his kids a first name starting with a different letter. :D

we aren't fighting in a real life situation so we have another chance of winning.

Sorry to be a little off topic on this one, but I have to say this..
My sensei put it to me this way when we were training for the All US Champs. If you get knocked out of bounds, it is YOUR fault for being there in the first place and not recognizing where you are on the court.
But, I have seen instances, where people (NCal/SCal tourney 2-3 years ago) where there was this guy in the Adult Kyu division that "sumoed" his way to a victory. He was so big that he took up literally 25% of the court and he pushed his way to the trophy. No kendo really.. Just shoving. He got penalized once for "unnecessary roughness" in the final match but he shoved again to get the final hansoku point and won.

Pushing and shoving may work for a little while, but once you learn how to deal with it, its not so powerful. In fact, it gives you the advantage. There's another thread somewhere in the forum talking about it quite a bit.
Ask yourself this: How far would that pushing guy get against a sensei?

I was at the U of T competition as well. I lost in the first round, but it was my first competition in the shodan / nidan division. I also went against the winner of the division in the first round, so I didn't feel too bad, I just wish I could have stayed in a little longer so I could have more matches. And in the team competition, the first round our team went against the Waterloo Team (I incidently went against Chiharu Hao, Women's Team Canada and one of my great inspirations) and needless to say, I got my butt kicked. I also lost in the women's division to the winner of the women's competition. Ack... oh well. It was definately a learning experience.

But French, I thought you were of the same build. ;) So that makes you both freight trains. :D
The Palo Alto dudes are doing good. The Uenos are leaving. Thought that would never happen. They've been with the dojo since they were kids! "The Yoon" won't be there. He's gonna go meet his g/f's parents in Japan this week. Maybe sumthin's up. Hmmmmmmmmmm...... I'll leave this before it becomes even more off-topic than what it is right now. :D
