I read some where on this subject that 1 guy reckoned that it was a bad idea to use sandpaper on the staves rather you should a knife and shave the cracks out?
What’s the expert opinion?
Is this mad or not?
Since I'm a new kendoka I need some direction
I don't want to take a razor sharp scalpel to my new shaini without knowing what I'm doing!!!:beard:

Shaving, filing and sanding all work. The nicest tool to use is one of those combo file/scraper deals, they look like a bottle opener. The file has a nice open pitch so it doesn't get clogged easily.

Hi Neil
your advice is always helpfull
but where can I find one of these knives you mentioned?
Remeber living in Ireland means all kendo equipt. must FedEx in.
and sending a kinfe through customs (rem 9/11) is a very bad idea!!
do you have any other recomendations of what to use?
that is also easily available

It's not really a knife:

or use a kitchen knife (the ones for fruits cuz they're small) works for me though you have to be carefull not to scrape really big chunks off

It's the file part of the ones I like that's really useful. Better than sandpaper because it doesn't clog, better than a knife because you don't unintentionally snag off huge splinters.
