Fighting like this is actually what got me interested in kendo - but historically, sai were intended to be used against swords - and like the difference between kendo and kenjutsu, the techniques & target areas changed; and as far as protection goes, sai don't work well wearing kote, which in any fight would be a legitimate target . . . interesting idea though. I tried metal sai with points protected, against shinai - but the shinai won't last long and tends to splinter . . .

yeah I didnt think about the kote thing. but I really wanna try to make something. just for fun. I just started learning sai and all I keep thinking about is how awesome it would be to use it in combat with bogu and rules of course. what kind of kamae and waza would develop? Just fun stuff to think about. Maybe the key would be to make a PVC sai. just a thought.

Well, if you got a kote, and modified the palm, by removing the leather at parts, then your grip would be freer. You can replace the removed leather with any kind of string that can fasten the kote to the palm.

bamboo sai would just be too light, if you've ever held real sai before, you'll know that they're a LOT heavier than you'd think.

there are rubber sai for safe training though, but i'm not sure if they're rigid enough to do techniques properly

theres a picture of them below

I have my own sai and its very heavy I agree. But I just started last week so I basically have no knowledge of sai at all. I was basically comtemplating the ifs. Mystic, why would the weight be important?

greger, perhaps a naginata kote could work?

Whenever I practice sai all I can think about is what would work against a kendoka and how a kendoka would defeat a person using sai(saika?)

Farmer vs Samurai: yeahhhh.

I would say that essentially you'd need to fight in a similar style to nito, but without the long sword, you'd be having to close in a lot more . . . and if it was me, you'd pick up a fair few tsuki on the way in:D

weight is very important in almost all weapons, using bamboo sai, would be like using a shinai made out of balsa wood, the sai wouldn't be able to 'control' the shinai without the user having to put masses of force behind it, to make up for lack of 'momentum'...

its hard to explain, but try taking a small kids shinai size 34 or so, and try doing some shikake waza with them... it just doesnt work as well..

How is sai fighting different than jutte fighting? The shinai doesn't really represents the sword that well. It's too long, too light, too fat, no ha and shinogi, the top and bottom are only defined by a string. The uchi bu is defined by a piece of leather wound around the string.

I would make saya by buying a shinai,

Cutting the top and bottom making it into a nito shoto!

Now the hard part is making a horse shoe out of bamboo or wood, you could use wood and a leather sock to make this part into a fukuro shinai. and bind it to the shoto with leather in a safe knot. If you want I’ll draw a diagram later.

with a jutte you use two hands, so you have more 'control'...

the sai's main advantage is being small/think with those prongs, if u made them out of 4 takes like a shinai most of the advantages go down the drain...

Maybe e-bogu would take up the challenge?

I've held a few antique jute which look very much like a converted gate posts :D. Heavy but not sure why two hands would be used?

I read Musashi used his own jute made in the way I was talking about like a Y and bokuto in the other hand.
Guess Musashi liked to make his own weapons too :D.

lol, Musashi is an exception in everything, katanas are meant to be two handed, but if you ever become as good as Musashi, you can start breaking a few rules :P

The latter is all ready in kengo three.
