View Full Version : search minimum word length too large

The minimum word length for the search function is five characters. That is too much, since a lot of japanese words are only two, three or four characters long. I vaguely remember that the minimum length has been four characters some time ago.
I don't know what the impact of the search function on the database and other parts of the site is, but a minimum of four characters, possibly lower, should be ok.

Search shinai and I guess you would get almost every post on the board.
Do you really have the time to search them all?
The search function even if you put a whole lot of word in it still only gives you one so unless you know the combination its still a waste of time any way.
Try ‘advanced’ and ‘search title’.
Try shinai grip, or shinai parts, shinai and boken, best shinai etc
I'm sure it will give you some thing relevant if you write more of what you want to know in the search box.

Not sure what you mean here. Apart from the word length issue, the search function works mostly like i would expect it. I can combine whatever words i like, as long as they are over four characters in length.

Searching for a title is also limited to words with more than four characters. Best shinai oder shinai grip will find everything with the word shinai.

The search function searches words and not word combonations so if you were to put in two words it would still search for the word you wanted.
You said you wanted the search function to alow you to use small words. For what reason? Why would you want to search for a word shorter than four letters? Heres an example of how to search and how the search function might work.

Here's a link to a good kendo equipment manual by Yasuji Ishiwata of Fukuda Budogu (Translated by Francis Bond). It's quite comprehensive, and features step by step illustrations on how to maintain each piece of your equipment.

Tying men himo
I have seen pictures where the strings are initially attached right at the top of the face guard (as on cover of Kendo: The Definitive Guide), and also where they are initially attached at about the third 'rung' up (this is how I and everyone at my club does it).
What are the pros and cons of each method?
Cheers
The method of tying on the top seems most common in Kansai. Is it common in other parts of Japan too? Nearly everyone there (in the countryside at least) seems to use it. Since you pass the himo round your neck you get a very secure tie. (I wonder if this dates back to the days when you might get your men torn off when defeated? This would prevent that from happening, I suppose... But I'm only guessing.) The other method is very fast to tie. I never liked it though. Personal preference. But if like me you're the only one in the Dojo using the "top" method, you might be the slowest to get men on. Not always a good position to be in. But I stick to my guns on this.

Strikes are allowed against only certain areas on the body - the top of the head (men), the right and left sides of the body (do), and the forearms (kote). Thrusts are only allowed to the throat (tsuki).

Problem using google is that the page would have to be INDEXED by google first. Not fun

It would be good if some one made a search program that could search web pages with unlimited options and store the results or some thing. Hint hint programing guys ;).

Essentially thats what google is, it goes page by page (using links) and saves all the stuff that is on the page. Or you can tell google to look at a page (takes a few months for them to actually index it)

I appreciate that you're trying to help me. Why would i want to search for small words? Because a lot of japanese words are short. Not my fault.
I do know about google, and did in fact use it for this. The problem with google is, that is has no idea of what it indexes. There are archive pages, print pages and all kinds of different layouts from kendo-world.com mixed up. It is not ordered in any sensible way, there are lots of duplicates because of the different formats, and the results are generally not as specific as the ones i can find with the search function on this site. Google is a very good search engine, but not specialized for this forum.
That's why i would like the search function to work with words of four characters and possibly even shorter ones. Not because i can't find what i want, but because it's inconvenient with the current configuration.

I agree, searching for four-letter words would be nice. Words like "seme", "kiai", "kote", "bogu". I also note that the wildcard doesn't work quite the way I'd like it too, for example if search for "kote*" you won't get any entries with just "kote", only stuff like "kote-men".

That explains why my searching for various combinations of "bogu", "men" and "himo" were useless... :(

Lots of common kendo words that people need to search for are 4 charcters or below.... I agree, it does need to be made smaller....

Yup. You ask a questions (specially when you're new to the forum or a beginner) and the question has been asked to death so you get told to 'do a search for threads on the forum before asking'. So say, you look up kiai (like I tried) and no joy. A shorter valid string would be great.
This has irritated me also... Not that you often want to search for just one short word, but it is often that you might want to use it in conjunction with another word.
A quick check however, reveals that the problem might not be related to only vBulletin but to the MySQL-server behind it. Changing the wordlength would require changing settings in the mysql server and restarting and rebuilding a few tables.
That is if the forum uses fulltext searches and not it's own indexing system, which is also available.

Yes! I've had people say exactly that to me before, but the search function wont actually let you search for it
