The other day I was getting ready to spar with my sensie and I knew something was just wrong. I knew something was wrong but it took me a few seconds to figure it out. He was in chudan, but his feet were switched. Right foot back, left foot in front, with a normal grip. One of the even wierder things was, he wasnt using normal footwork neither, he was using a natural/walking, footwork, were he would advance by just moving his back foot foward, but mostly keeping his right foot back. I just thought it was realy wierd, and I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what kind of stance it that, and why he was using it? Thanks in advance. Peace.
BTW, he still beat my a**.
Ahmed.

Ahmed, ask your sensei about it and tell us what it was exactly.

If he ever does it again, I will ask him, but now its too late, he might not even remember.

Maybe it's a Korean thing? Looked to see whether you are Kendo or Kumdo...
I know a really advanced person of high rank can know how to fight with the left foot forward, but that's all I know. I never heard of using ayumi-ashi(walking footwork) along with it yet. So... ???
I bet Neil-sensei will know. :)

you have created curiousity in us about this technique you are talking about, just ask your sensei and see whether he still remembers it?

That kind of footwork is called nami-ashi or nanba aruki or various other variations. There's a textbook on the subject by a Tsukuba uni graduate (7th dan at time of publication). I'm afraid I can't remember his name.

Oh great Kingofmyrrh, thanks for that. I googled nami-ashi and found some really interesting stuff. Keep it coming please.

Mingshi found the answer. The guy's name is Kidera. You may well have already seen the other sites she mentions.

IMHO, although thanks to King some light was shed on the subject, you should ask your sensei about it nevertheless.
