ive got a grading next sunday, but ive just had a session with my osteopath type blokey to work on my shoulder (now in more pain than before) and he said i shouldnt do anything that requires stretching my arm out for a bit esp. kendo
it means i'll have to scoop B&J icecream left handed at work next week too
its my first ever grading and he said i could risk it if i want but he'd advise against it and i definately cant train on wednesday
any advise on what i should do?
:p

That's a tough choice. It is probablt best to hash it out with your sensei. Personally, I'd do it. If you fail, your money will be returned, and you will have quite a bit of valuable advice from people who might not ordinarily have a chance to give you pointers.
When I did my exam (in which there was absolutely no mention of koryu, for those who remember a certain individual's flaming retort to me about koryu and iai exams), the entire morning was devoted to practice. During that time, many different senseis and other skilled people were watching potential examinees, and offering advice. If your exam also has a seminar in the morning, and you don't feel up to actually being graded, you might want to tag along for the extra practice. I got quite a bit out of it, anyway.

hmnn...true...good words
its my first kendo exam and im not even allowed to stretch my arm out let alone hold a shinai and use it
might just see how loose it (my shoulder) is in a couple of days
i just dont wanna waste the £35 which wasnt even close to being the session it gets fixed
grr arg choices

Go to the grading in Watchet in May. It's only 1 month away and it's a nice seminar too. (The B&B's in that area are fantastic!)

If there's another grading so close, then be reasonable and wait. However, going to the practice seminar before the exam, if you're feeling chipper, might prove very rewarding.

Rottenpunk...
Go... even if it is just to watch and get a feeling of the grading.
Don't take a chance on injuring yourself though.... we dont want you out of action for too long :p

Ask your sensei - But I would leave the grading & recover the injury if you make it worse by training youll just be out longer
there are lots of grading chances this year (though unless youve already registered for watchet you are too late)
Next chance Stoke in July then Lidstone in October

Bah, just contact Mr. Howell, explain the situation and you should be ok for grading in Watchet..especially as you had already applied for a grading.

"i decided ive bin training injured for such a long time another week wont matter"
This is very poor thinking
Whilst you get 100% for effort and dedication, you get 0 for common sense
another week could make a LOT of difference especially if its a serious injury (or about to become one).
You dont say what level you are grading for but Im asuming its in the range 6 to 2 kyu as ikkyu gradings are national events and there arent any of those till watchett
In your place id count the fee as a donation to the club / association and get the injury checked out - not just rested
there will be another chance to grade - but if you have a permanent injury well.....
good luck anyway
cheers

Phil,
she is (unfortunately) my iaido student and you are correct...she has no sense! I sometimes wonder if I have any for starting her off in kendo in the first place!:D
Debz, for once be sensible and just go and watch, pay for the treatment, and get yourself sorted out for next time. Its not worth doing yourself even more mischief just for a low kyu grade. What worries me is how you managed to injure yourself in the first place...
And I dont know HOW MANY TIMES I have to tell you to not worry about grading, its what you do in the dojo that counts, not some certificate on the wall:angry:
See me at Lancaster and return the easter egg for not listening to me, its the only fit punishment for a chocoholic. I'll just have to eat it instead...;)

RP,
Tim is right - you are a poor unfortunate ;-)) but if you were a student of mine I would insist that you get treatment rather than grade. You are showing admirable dedication by trying to grade despite the injury but there will be other chances IF you are fit to train
Tim - youre right she is unfortunate ;-) but it could be worse - she might have ended up as my student so there is a silver lining !

yeah thanks for all the positive input
i cant get it fixed till i can get the number of a preston dude and the osteopath type guy said i could go for the grading if i want-it wont make the injury any worse, just not better
also it would mean i cant work as it means stretching the arm out to get icecream, popcorn etc.
tim-too late on the egg, that went on saturday, twas good-i feel my egg effort was a little inadequate now
when is lancaster? i might not make it if i have started treatment by then-but if not i will send your hammer with someone else-no one was in on tuesday and i cudnt remember the number of your house to post it through the box
im not placing a total importance on the grading, i just want to get the experiance and stress relief before my exams, and it would be a good indication of how bad i am doing at the moment

Daft bugger but good luck with the grade !
(BTW the best measure of your progress is feedback from your sensei - but as youve got Tim I can see whay the paper is so important ;-)

I only started her at kendo, the guilty party lives a lot closer to you than me, unless you've moved from Stoke of course... think its someone from Halifax area????
Lancaster is May 18th, no rush for my mekugi hammer though, you can give me it back at the summer seminar or at Glasgow kendo championships in July. You should get some cheap bogu there if you can make it. If you cant go let me know and we'll sort some stuff out for you. I'll need sizes for your head measurement etc. and how much you want to pay...Sure Phil and I can get you a good deal though.....;)

ok so you can say i told you so
i only got 5th kyu-grr
it all went wrong on the day and i got nervous thats why i failed driving 3 times so far-nothing much wrong with the driving until theres an examiner there-wierd
i'll try to get to kendo championships but it depends what im doin workwise-but i'll measure myself and stuff for you if i cant
im thinkin of paying as less as possible for a good kit as im skint
hopefully not much more than £350/£400 unless theres something exceptional along the lines of purple &dragons but i dont really know how much a good quality beginners kit would cost
(must have puirple stitching though-if its possible)...(and blue to match my gi-but blacks ok-just not white)...(and a pretty do-not like your hideously expensive brown one-dont like brown...purples nice)

You fenced well on Sunday and definately earned Gokyu.
What are you saying about brown Do's.... hmm.....?!?!? GRRRR....
The wooden effect is all the rage this year............. :)

Theres nothing wrong with my mega expensive bronze (not brown) 80 piece bamboo do with mother of pearl inlay with the deerskin leather work and 1.5mm hand stitching... you are just jealous I got it as a present.... and its still too posh for you to hit. Although as you failed it sounds like you couldn't hit it anyway..
YOU - nervous??? You should have thought that your tekki was that irritating bloke from my local club or someone similar, that would have done the trick...

"i only got 5th kyu"
which shows progression - the only useful purpose of gradings
congratulations
