i tie on men in kansai style since i do not feel very secure with kanto style. my men is just slightly big enough if i tie it on in kanto style, it feels like it's going to come off.
most of the time, i'm not the first to tie on the men, but i'm not the last either. but i would like to speed up the process of putting on the men.
is there any trick or faster way to tie on the men in kansai style? i really have problem putting on the men when i'm extra tired from working at office.

I have a slightly big men too and i've found that attaching the men himo to the third grate instead of the fourth, kanto style, it feels a lot more secure.
Maybe it works for you too this way you have the ease of tying kanto and the tighter fit of kansai.

Does any one have any info on the two styles?
Well the trick is to do is sloppy! Just tie it and fix it later. Easy as that...

as for doing it sloppy, that's not an option :) i would rather like to have my men on my head during the practice :)

Ah ah aah, no cheating. By the way tying Kansai sloppy will probably take near as much time as tying it correctly. But i gave up on Kansai can't seem to get the himo thru the top fast enough. And besides I have a thick skull for protection when my men comes off. :D

Practice, Practice, Practice. When your sitting at home watching tv, when the commercial comes on practice putting on your men.

Don't take that little philosophy to your next grading.

Hey Pete,
I hope this isn't because of what I said at the end of practice on Wednesday. But doesn't Yoshida-sensei use Kansai-style to tie his men-himo? Why not ask him?

I wasn't actually complaining about Pete. I'm in charge of the university club (I don't lead practice, but I'm in charge administratively) and we've been starting later and later each day and running over our time slot. Also a couple people have a habit of chatting quite a bit while putting their men on and it takes them a large amount of time to finish up. So I made some comments at the end of practice to the effect that people should strive to be on time and to not dilly dally when putting their men on. They weren't directed at Pete (which is what I was worried about in my first post) just general comments instead of singling anyone out.

Daniel... yes Yoshida-sensei ties his men kansai style. Most men are bought with 7 shaku himo and those usually aren't long enough so I have never tried kansai. I don't usually have a problem with my men not staying on ok using kanto style tho'.

Okay, taking a quick break from working on my thesis (I want a beer).
Yeah the only problem I ever have with my men is sometimes it pinches my glasses to my head and it hurts after a while.
Pete, have you ever had that problem, and if so did changing does using Kansai style affect it at all?

daniel,
it's not about the wed. night x) i 100% agree with you about everything you said at the end of the practice. also, i might add that new guys should clean the dojo floor before the practice starts, but i'm not sure if we should push them that hard.. lol.
i just need to find a way to put my men on faster. actually i don't have issue with my glasses. they are rather comfortable in my men. i specified that i wear glasses when i ordered the men and i think they adjusted for that.
when i used to tie on kanto style, i used to tie on men extremely tight. i would pull the himo until it will hurt side of my head, and that did bother my glasses. but even with that, men didn't feel secure for me.
on wed. night i was extra slow because i didn't have my do and tare on before putting on the men. and i'm rather insecure about my do too which takes extra effort to secure the himo. i found that loop around leather loop and putting the himo through the leather loop works the best. once done i pull on the himo rather tight until they are very secure.
way i see it, the bogu should be done secure and tight enough that i do not have to readjust during the practice. kanto style of putting on my men doens't give me that extra security.
i did observe yoshida-sensei putting on his men number of times. i do exactly the way he does it. but i'm still slower. i think i should just practice it more often at home. one trick i saw him doing is that he make a knot after passing the himo under the chin. that way the himo hold itself tight enough when passing the himo under the center bar on top. he's just much much better at everything than me :)

Pete, Yoshida sensei is better tnan all of us at everything kendo ;) lol. As for glasses, you guys might notice that I dont wear mine during kendo because I do have a problem with them. Perhaps I should order some 8 shaku himo and try kansai style tying myself so I can wear my glasses like Pete does. hmmm...

mike,
without my glasses, i'm blind as a bat. i thought about contacts, and surgery.. but the though of someone messing around with my eyes just doesn't agree with me.
yes, yoshida-sensei is just on totally different level.

For speed, I would suggest tying it kanto style. To ensure tightness, make sure the knot behind your head is low.

Contacts work great for me but I have a friend who feels the same way as you and he uses Mengan (http://www.bogubag.com/Bogu/Pads/Mengan/mengan_wear_L.jpg) glasses. They work well for him.

I'm going to have to second that Pete.:lick: I just got new lenses over this past winter break, so now I can actually see things clearly.

Actually, it's not that we don't push them to clean the floor... it's that the broom keeps disapearing.
