When you reach a certain dan- level, it is usual to have a formal wear to use on larger venues then your everyday practice. I heard that from godan and up in znkr you are expected to use montsuki and also shinken on gradings. Japanese use their family crest, a mon on their jacket. For a non-japanese, I have understood that if he has sort of affiliation to one spesific iai-teacher, it is possible to be permitted to use that familys mon. Do japanese choose a mon out of private preferences? is it bad taste for a non-japanese to choose a "nice" mon.
Any thoughts about mon and montsuki in and outside of Japan is appreciated

From what my Japanese contact says if your family has a mon you would wear that out of pride, if family doesn't you would pick a mon used by someone who's famous and wear that one. I suppose it's a bit like non-Scots and clanless Scots wearing another family's tartan in theory it's a big no no however people just give it a big ignoring and wear any that takes their fancy.
Anyway, from what they say you can pick and wear whatever you like.

The best thing for a non-japanese to do on their own, is to use one that he knows the meaning of in detail and has chosen for a specific reason. Do a little research and it will be fine. However do not choose things like the imperial chrysanthemum or Tokugawa mon, its just poor taste to do so.
If you have a sensei with whom you are associated, then ask him what is appropriate. If he has a mon, odds are he will suggest you use it as well if you like. And because it is a mark of pride and respect for ones family, his allowing you to do so is a sign of his respect and friendship for you. Its not as if you are adopted or anything, but be sure to thank him if it happens.

Even though it is our club-logo, I do not like it. I will not buy a montsuki until I reach godan, which can be earliest in four years. Plenty of time for redesign, I guess:D

So you wont do any demonstrations or embu before then? I'd buy one anyway ( unless you intend to put on lots of weight!!) as at the moment you have the money!!:D

I just came home after my second practise with my new jacket, a nice black(expensive) one from nine circles with ordinary sleeves and juban. Boosted my performance with at least three years of hard practise. The room was brimming with kigurai!!!
I am going to put on velcro for my zekken soon. This will have to do for some time , I do not expect to hide mediocre performance in a flashy outfit :D

I have definetly gained enough weight, even though I have seen quite a number of experienced iaidoka with far more "hara" than me....
