For the European kendokas, my last day at Butokuden I got to practice with the Eurpoean Kendo Renmei Kaicho. He wasn't wearing a zekken so I didn't get his name. Also, I met a couple of kenshi from England, one was from KMNS (or KNMS, I don't remember) and the other was from Doshinkan.

One Monday I got to practice with one of the few remaning kyu-dans, Inouye sensei. It was really cool.

That's what she said.

Doh. I guess visiting all those shrines and temples didn't help much.

One of the highlights of my trip was shocking all the kenshi at Butokuden by changing in the dojo proper like all the men. My friend told me that all the other women were shocked. So from then on I went into the female changing room.

Before you get all excited... I was wearing t-shirt and shorts (it was SNOWING outside). That's why I didn't see what the fuss was, but I went to the changing room thereafter because I didn't want to disrespect.

I did jigeiko with the guy with the big white handlebar moustache.

There you go ruining all my dreams....

Jigeiko with the EKF Kaicho was interesting, because basically Tazaki-sensei (the hachidan leading Butokuden practice that night) hustled me into Ducarme-sensei's line almost as soon as I had bowed out with him (Tazaki-sensei). It was also really interesting because that was my first practice with a kendoka from Europe.

Why only in Europe? You should come here. It's loverly when it's not the rainy season. I like my zekken too. When I first got it I didn't quite care for it but I like the blockiness of the lettering now. It's sorta unique.

Funny thing Paburo. My former kendo sensei said that to "not restrict movement" men should go "commando" in their hakamas. He was Japanese and that was in Toyama, one of the coldest places in North-Central Japan.
I still go "commando" when I practice Iaido in the summer. Since the men all change together next to the practice area, it's a bit tricky changing so that no one witnesses anything they shouldn't though.

Hey Runsyi, you scrub up ok! Wanna hook up? I thought that we were collecting money so that my friend Anjin can go there in Hawai to practice Kendo, eat a home cooked meal and maybe get along with Honolulu Azumi. So I think you're stepping into an off limits area..

It'll probably be a while as the 'ol pocketbook needs some time to recover (I spent a lot of time in Tozando), but sure!

Weren't you the bloke who is being held captive by his sensei and not allowed to do anything but practice? And what is bottle? Trust me, I don't have the ability. Thankfully you don't need it if you are a girl there, then you can just shyly smile and say, "sensei wa kakkoii desu." They'll love you!

I remember being on the opposite end of that sort of thing. I got permission to practice with an MJER group at a small dojo in Kawasaki a number of years ago. No change rooms, so everyone changed in the main dojo. We were six men and two women. I tried not to stare, but the Hello Kitty undies were just too much for me! :)
