Hi All,
I recently viewed a thread and hai hai pointed something about someones number of post in relation to kendo experience. Question: does the number of posts in this forum relatively commensurate to someones ability, skill and experience?

Yes. I am 22 posts from rokudan.
Hai_hai, despite his national disability, jumped from godan to hachidan, and looking forward to his hanshi exam.

On a serious note (sorry to bring everyone back to the purpose of this thread) but of course not. Anyone can type a witty comment or an "i agree" but if they do that two hundred times it doesn't make them sankyu if they've never stepped inside a dojo.
It only becomes a problem (like we've seen in the past...) when you get people with little or limited experience acting like great authorities. Peronsally, I try to be careful with any 'advice' I give. I've only been in armour for two weeks - I'm not about to go telling anyone how to perform correct waza but if you need advice on how to build up strength in a weak left wrist, I'm your girl. I've had to work through that problem myself and did so successfully so that's something I can safely give someone advice on without screwing up their kendo.
I've now fallen into the habit of checking someone's profile if I don't already know them if they're giving technical advice to check their ranking and experience in the given field.

Good idea.
Check old posts of mine and you won't find kendo advice as I am relatively new to kendo, but much more involved in iai and kenjutsu.

A high post count is like a pimped out sports car... people are compensating for something...
Hey!!! Stop looking at me like that!!! :)
Seriously, I think post count is more a function of how bored we are at work or how much we are procrastinating from our studies...

If my skill was related to my posting (for example every 100 posts = 1dan) then I'd be 14Dan right now........ But I'm not, there is no such thing as 14th dan and amt of posts definitely don't relate to somebody's actual skill.

If somebody's been a member for 3 weeks and has 900 posts, it's a pretty safe bet their experience is little to none. Obviously there are people on here who post a lot who are sharing valuable knowledge and experience, but no, you can't infer anything about level of experience from post count, high or low. You might do better from their join date, if they've been a member since the day after Hamish, they've at least been interested for a while.
I've now fallen into the habit of checking someone's profile if I don't already know them if they're giving technical advice to check their ranking and experience in the given field. don't forget the rank in the profile is just something the user enters. I could set my profile to call myself the soke of Stimpy-ryu.

The joke is this video was made as a joke. This game World of Warcraft has such a huge following. This was made to make fun of the gamers who play this game. Maybe us Americans just have a strange sense of humor.

Question: does the number of posts in this forum relatively commensurate to someones ability, skill and experience?Yes. In my case it's the ability to avoid work, the skill to type quickly and the experience of hanging around here long enough to accumulate a ridiculous post count.
As for correlation to kendo experience, sadly no.

I wasnt referring to rank, i was more interested about someones wisdom, deeper understanding of the art and has probably developed the right attitude of somebody who could guide a beginner towards the correct path and not ridicule him/her just because of a lets say...spelling and grammar.

A "common" area where the "common" people reside? We don't want that do we? We like to have our own special Kendo nerds space we don't want to share it with common people. If that happens I will pack up and move to a better neighborhood.:ermm:

If someone is sloppy with regard to spelling, grammar etc. do you suppose they will be different in their kendo training?
Why is correcting someone's miconception and/or misunderstnding about kendo "guiding a beginner towards the correct path" but correcting sloppyness "ridicule"?

The thing I try to do is (and I sometimes fail at this) to not correct somebody elses problem when it is also yours.
