New Zealand Earthquake Response

  • New Zealand Earthquake Response

Most all have heard by now of the devastating earthquake that has hit the south island of New Zealand, most notably the City of Christchurch. Our prayers go out to all those affected, to the many suffering the loss of loved ones, their homes and property.

Our own Alex Bennett, Editor-in-Chief of Kendo World was with his family only minutes away from ground-zero at the time the earthquake hit. We are thankful that the Bennetts escaped unharmed, and look on with concern as they fight the elements, rain and cold, amidst electrical outage, interruption of water, and loss of phone lines.

The president of, Hiro Imafuji Sensei, a former New Zealand, Christchurch City Sei Tou Ken Yu Kai kendo club member, has created a donation site to support the club members in the wake of the destruction:

Those who wish to donate or help directly seek out may also seek out the following agencies.
    1) The Australian Red Cross, which has set up a New Zealand Earthquake 2011 Response Site:
    2) The Salvation Army New Zealand, which also has an "Earthquake Appeal" page:

We appeal for your support in whatever form you are able,

    The Kendo World Team

I just got back in Japan. Was picked up at Narita by Nabeyama-san from Tsukuba. Glad to be back in one piece, but wish I could be in Chch to help with the massive rebuilding task that lies ahead. Our Chch Kendo Club is in bad shape, and we suffered an immense tragedy. My brother Blake has just arrived back in NZ from Osaka to help the members fight through this dark period.

My condolences to the family and friends of the young Japanese kendoka and International student who I believe was in the CCTV building. She must have been a very postive person out there doing her best in life, tragic.
