  • 2011 Maguro Cup

    2011 Maguro Cup

I've trekked up to the very top of Honshu to check out the inaugural Maguro cup, a middle-school kendo competition held in Oma. Oma is well-known in Japan for the maguro, or yellow-fin tuna, that are caught in the tumultuous meeting of the Pacific and the Sea of Japan between Hokkaido and Honshu. They have held a local competition here for the last 36 years, but this is the first time they've held a tournament open to schools from other prefectures. As most of the teams attending have suffered since the tsunami and earthquake on 3/11, it's also meant to act as a picker-uppe...

    59th All Japan Prefectural Championships

    Report by Taylor Winter

The 29th of May saw the 59thAll Japan Prefectural Championships hosted in Osaka. New Zealand Earthquake Response

Most all have heard by now of the devastating earthquake that has hit the south island of New Zealand, most notably the City of Christchurch. Our prayers go out to all those affected, to the many suffering the loss of loved ones, their homes and property. Our own Alex Bennett, Editor-in-Chief of Kendo World was with his family only minutes away from ground-zero at the time the earthquake hit. We are thankful that the Bennetts escaped unharmed, and look on with concern as they fight the elements, rain and cold, amidst electrical outage, interruption of water, a...

The 34th Nippon Kobudo Embu Taikai

    By Jeff Broderick

The 34th Nippon Kobudo Embu Taikai was held at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo, on February 6th, 2011. Taking place annually, this event always attracts a large crowd of history buffs and martial arts enthusiasts. This year in particular, perhaps due to a recent surge of interest in all things samurai-related, the crowd seemed even larger than usual. 35 different martial ryuha from across Japan gathered to demonstrate their varied techniques to the crowd - everything from empty-hand arts such as jujutsu, karate, and aikijujutsu, to weapon arts like iaido, sojutsu (spearmanship), archery, kenjutsu, and even gunnery were on display. Before the demonstrations, a special ceremony was held in which Sasamori Sensei of Ono-ha Itto-Ryu Kenjutsu, and Takeuchi Sensei of Takenouchi-Ryu Jujutsu received special awards from the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai, recognizing their ongoing efforts to maintain and spread classical martial arts.
