Not quite an Olympic Sport, but sort of… Organization for the world’s first Sportaccord Combat games to be held this year in Beijing from August 28th to September 4th is well underway. The martial arts represented at the games are all from international federations registered with the IOC-related General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF)- now called SportAccord. The kendo event will be held on September 3rd and 4th. Eighty-three of the world’s top kendōka will represent their countries at a number of kendo events conducted over the two days. Open the PDF file to see the schedule for kendo. Although the list hasn’t been made public yet, I can tell you that Teramoto, Uchimura, and Wakō will be representing Japan in the men’s event! Both the Yang brothers will be there as well to keep them on their toes.
A group of fifteen referees from the various FIK zones will adjudicate the matches, and a preparatory shimpan seminar will held in Narita in June. This means that the annual Summer Camp for Foreign Kendo Leaders (Gedatsukai) will not be held this year, as is the case on World Kendo Championship years as well.
Check out the promotional video explaining this historic event. Of course, Kendo World will be there in force to cover the proceedings. In fact, quite a few KW readers and contributors will be actually participating in some capacity. Hope to see you there!
so this will be the first "games" for Kendo. it s one step before having "preserved" martial arts entering the Olympic family. What does the anti-olympic mouvement think about it in Japan?
I'm reaching out to seasoned kendoists regarding bogu advice. I've read the sticky and still at a loss to which site would be recommended (US). I have a $600-$700 budget. Ive used e-bogu for shinai and been eyeing their 3mm that's on special. ...
Hi All,
Question, when can you wear a zekken in a dojo? Maybe to put things in more context, when are you actually awarded to wear a zekken to represent your dojo?
I have never thought about this much. When I'm in training, I think about the training ahead but not much about the zekken. I got...
Hey everyone,
I've been looking into Iaito lately, and I've found a few I rather like on Tozano.com that are nice and basic, as well as well within my price range.
I'm consulting my sensei about everything, so don't worry about me rushing into buying anything based on what the forum says; I'm...
So I have looked and looked but have failed at finding many accounts about the Bekkasei program from women who have attended. Only the men seem to really go into much detail. Are there any women bekkasei here who would be willing to share their experiences? Or does anyone know where such stories...
