    Thank you for all the suggestions folks - much appreciated. I'll give the focus on the ball/just behind the ball of the foot a try.

    As for taping, when I need to (if it gets horrendous, walking is barely an option, let alone more Kendo!), I've become quite a dab hand - I often use the taping between the toes method to hold everything in place. My personal top tip - KT tape. Whilst I'm of the opinion that it doesn't do much in terms of support or helping soft tissue damage heal, its flexibility is very useful for taping one's feet back together! The cheaper stuff on a roll works a treat! YMMV.
