I swear by my Sunuke bokuto. Denser than oak, and pretty to look at. It doesn't dent easily, and can put some serious dents into oak.

Sunuke bokuto? What does it mean? Where do you get one?

Sunuke is a Japanese hardwood. I don't know what it is called in English. It's heavy and strong. Lots of places that sell kendogu sell them, though they're fairly expensive.

I know bogubag.com has them. Look in the "swords" section.

          Hello all

Bogubag is using the old kunrenshiki English thats leads to some wierd spelling and is confusing to those that try to pronounce it.

I am pretty sure it should be Kusu no ki

          Its a Camphor tree.

Shrines are preferably built by such trees. God climbs down them.

            Sunuke is not camphor.
I believe the tree name is "Isu no ki", a variety of Oak. "Isu no ki", which grows about 20-25 meters tall, and 1 meter in diameter, grows in Kyushu, primarily in the forests of Kumamoto.
Sunuke is the name of the wood from the core of the tree.
Sunuke bokuto can be purchased from most major kendo supply shops in Japan (Tozando for one. You can find others by doing a web search in Japanese. 'Sunuke' must be in _KATAKANA_ to get the most amount of hits). It is quite pricey, but it is a beautiful and durable wood.

                hey Hyaku,
remember that laminated bamboo one I bought? Even Neil has only managed to dent it!! Its lasting quite well, if it gets a 'dent' I just steam it out.
