            I didn't know that Canada also had internment camps so thanks for the info.

            But my question wasn't about kendo being banned in Canada during WWII. One would expect countries at war with Japan at the time to ban Japanese cultural activities. Starting at 1:20, the interviewed sensei (couldn't quite catch his name) says kendo was outlawed in Japan during WWII while it flourished in internment camps.

            Perhaps what he meant to say was that kendo was banned in Japan AFTER WWII but since it flourished in Japanese communities in North America, partly due to the camaraderie at internment camps, that the torch was carried on in a sense in places like Canada until kendo and other martial arts were practice again in post-war Japan. To my knowledge kendo was not banned in Japan DURING WWII.
