  • Purpose of loop behind the Do

Hi all, what's the purpose of the fabric loop behind the do? I've seen some seniors tie an omamori charm for luck but what's the official purpose for it?

In the old days, Japanese dojo often had pegs along the wooden transoms for hanging bogu between practices. One purpose of the dou loop is for running himo from the various bits of bogu through each other and finally through the dou's inner loop to bring it all together for hanging.

Equipmemt manuals usually have diagrams of how to tie up for this purpose. If you search for photos of the old (demolished) Noma Dojo, you can see bogu hung up along transoms in the hikaenoma areas (reserve areas off the main dojo floor).
