  • 2005 Founder's Cup Writeup/Pics

    (Here's hoping everything works..)

Well this weekend kendo clubs from all over the state competed in the Founder's Cup in Hornsby. While Sunday was the actual competition, Saturday was the grading... and I made ikkyu. Aw yeah.
My left leg cramped up in a major way during kakari-geiko but it's pretty easy to ignore something like that when you're pumped up on adrenaline.

On the Sunday were the competitions. The kyu kata team was consisted of me and KHuang who passed shodan the day before. Unfortunately we came up against Sydney and were knocked out first round.

The kyu teams comp was a mixed bag. We were already down by 1 since our 5th member didn't make it (ie: we had to forfeit a point) and we ended up being knocked out. It was still a strong showing and sensei was quite impressed with how we fought.

    Oh hey look, pics!

http://members.iinet.com.au/~nhuisman/meineyes.JPG - A member of our Dan team has his face lit up.

http://members.iinet.com.au/~nhuisman/animepose.JPG - Cool shot, this just reminded me of an anime for some reason.

    http://members.iinet.com.au/~nhuisman/bunderblock.JPG - Dave Bunder blocks a cut.

Overall, huge weekend. A long drive for us Wollongong folk (5am start!) but overall deinfately worth it. The lunch provided was definately good too. Mmmmm... korean BBQ'd meats. We need a korean restaurant down here.

Thanks to the Sydney Kendo Club, all the organisers and sensei, the grading panel and participants!

lol Chook thanks for the pics! Now I can't get the name "bunderblock" out of my head!

Talking about the bento....you should have heard what the proprietor of the shop said to Doug and I when we collected the boxes.

Congrats on the grading by the way - very impressive!

I know the shots are blurry but I just can't bring myself to use a flash during a shiai. An infrared flash, now there's an idea.

It's probably quite different depending on the country/association....

But I had to do kirikaeshi, uchikomigeiko, kakarigeiko, 2 bouts of jigeiko and then the first three kata. Pretty large amount of work (they made us do kirikaeshi, uchikomi and kakari three times each) But I was that psyched up I didn't feel exhausted at all.
