  • New Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu Group in Belgium

    Dear All,

There is a new HNIR group in Leuven, Belgium:

    http://www.kuro-shishi.be/

The dojo-cho, Mr Jari Pallari, received permission from Iwami-soke some time ago and the group has been running for a little while now, but the addition of a new website is a good opportunity as any to tell the world about them!

If you wish to visit or ask any questions, please email Jari here:

    dojo@kuro-shishi.be

If you are looking for HNIR in other countries, you can find them here:

    United Kingdom
    Worldwide

    All the best,

    Scott Halls

          His contacts are
          xinhuan@seed.net.tw

          chen.xinhuan@msa.hinet.net

          and the website
          http://www.butokuten.twmail.org
(but the english version is apparently under construction.)

In case some people are close to the region and would like to learn from high level instructors.

For the record, Imai Masayuki 10th soke of Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu gave three menkyo kaidens before his passing. One of those three was named 11th soke of HNIR and was charged with continuing the tradition.

                    VA seminar canceled!

Due to an unfortunate and unanticipated snafu with US-ICE, I am forced to cancel the seminar in Alexandria, VA.

I would like to further Halls sensei's post

As a twelfth generetion menkyo of the ryu you should understand that not menkyo/menkyo kaiden are a licenced to teach. Some have "meigi" an honorary document. The sum total knowledge, heart feeling of a ryu is handed down by man to man tuition over many years, not on paper. I was fortunate enough to be able to be taught by Imai Soke. To practice and teach alongside and also be taught by Iwami Soke and to have the opportunity and permission to be able to go it alone after Imai soke passed away. Also to be privy to a lot of the private inner workings of the ryu. Imai soke was like a grandfather to me.

You should know that Imai soke wished to return to Musashi's old stye of issuing three menkyo kaiden. Iwami Soke purchased pen and brushes and sat down with Imai Soke to decide who else could recieve the honour. A young Miyamoto San (student from boyhood). Kin Chin was honoured because they Taiwanese send Musashi's Bokuto back to Japan. Before the war the 8th soke had lived and taught there. The other Menkyo Kaiden went to the 9th Sokes son. He then left the Hombu to teach down the road.

Imai soke was devastated. Ensuing events made the situation impossible. He then made Iwami Sensei the 11th Soke. Kin Chin although having the opportunity to liase with The new Soke has never done so. In actual fact he is connected with the group that decided to practice with one of the oldest students of the ryu that also went off to do his own thing. Who also assisted Imai Soke at demonstrations called Gosho Sensei.

Just a a quick response to let you and others aware of who is in the ryu and who is not.

For my information could you tell me if Kin Chin can honour his Menkyo Kaiden with allegiance to the present recognised Soke?

                        Thanks for the post, Watkin-sensei.

I chose to put the polite version up but yours pretty much clears it up if anyone had any queries as to the difference between receiving an honorary menkyo kaiden and becoming soke.

This gentleman succeeded Mr Kiyonaga (11th head of Gosho-ha) so I guess he is 12th head of this group.

The 11th soke of Hyoho Niten Ichi-ryu is Iwami Toshio Harukatsu, and as he is alive and very well, he won't be passing on his title anytime soon. The seito line of HNIR is here, and is recognised by the historians at the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai and Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai.

Here's a link to the NKK's HNIR page.

Scott, which city is the Australian branch in? It doesn't say on the Website and it would be handy to know.

                              Cheers
