General iaido related issues
Introduction: This is a guide intended to help beginners with buying their first iaito. Before shopping for an iaito, be sure your sensei thinks you are ready for one. The most important point in this entire guide, which will be reiterated incessantly, is this: ASK YOUR SENSEI FIRST! I cannot...

Hi Minna-san, I was just looking for information on Sword Forum International and I ran across this extremely informative thread that shows in graphic detail using photos, how a wallhanger(The dangerous 440-steel swords and the like.) is made. Would you please sticky this to the top of the...
How often should you clean a stainless steel katana with the powder ball, if its a wall hanger piece? How often if you use it? When you hand a katana over to someone is there a traditional way to do so? Hand placement and what not.
I recently purchased a used Itaio off Ebay. Its a beautiful Swordstore job with green accents. The only problem I have is that the sageo is a tad bit short, But its silk and verrrry nice. Is there any way to stretch it??? Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.
hello reader of this post, i found a website which allows you to pick and choose from various tsuba, grips, blades and much more- to create your own iaito, personal i think its a tad expensive, but if you can afford it, i think its a good idea  ...
Hi, guys, I know this may not be of any interest to most, but thought I should share. Next September, my State Kendo & Iaido association (TenKen Ryuu) is hosting the National Iaido Championships of the Mexican Kendo Federation in Guadalajara, Mexico. This is big news, as...
At what rank are examiners looking for hara to sword coodination? As in physically seeing movement initiate from it?
Does anyone run summer/winter training camps for swordsmanship? You know, up before dawn, running in the woods/on the beach, press ups in streams/kicking against the waves in the sea, cutting practice as the sun comes up, meditation, breakfast, regular training etc for five days or something. I...
Hello, I am currently doing kendo-however i am still fairly new, i have only had a few lessons. My sensei suggested that when i get a bit older ( i am currently 14 years old) that i should start Iaido as it would complement my maai in kendo. So i decided to do some research on Iaido and honestly...
I was told by my Sensei a few years ago while examining some swords that you cannot do proper Iaido with O-kissaki, because the yokote that you need as the pivot point for your noto has so much tip after it you can't physically put it in, unless you change the position all together. Just curious...
Hey everyone! Haven't been around here for ages but needs must. My sensei and I are researching purely standing styles, given my inability to kneel, and we've thrown up two, Toyama ryu batto do and Nakamura ryu batto do. This video:...
Ok this might seem a newby question, and it is, but I was wondering something: has Iaido always been in the curriculum of the samurai? By this I mean: did the early samurai learned these iai techniques and if so, for what purpose? I suppose kendo was more important for them in that time, so where...
In seitei #6 after the tsuki and prior to the pulling/turning action for the first kirioshi, how do most people preform the turn? I used to push off my right foot to power the left foot as it extends backwards behind me and utilized the legs to "pull" my sword out of my opponents body. So I...
Hi everyone - just as the title says, I wanted to check with the iaido community here to see what the most current ZNKR manual (English) edition is that people are using. I was under the impression that the 2006 edition was the most current, as this is still being sold in the AJKF online store....
I have a circulation problem in my lower legs which causes occasional swelling. Kneepads get very uncomfortable at these times, sometimes downright painful. I've tried numerous brands over three years, and have not been able to find a comfortable pair. I've gotten to the point where I try to...
Is it an unspoken prerequisite that people who advance higher in iaido should learn a lot about their iaito or shinken, or is that just the impression I'm getting from the subset of foreign iaidoka here on the Kendo World forums? I ask because there are a lot of discussion with people who go...
Does anyone here own a 'real' katana? I don't just mean just a shinken but a proper forged, tamahagane, made-by-a modern-Japanese-master-sword smith and costing several tens of thousands of pounds sterling, katana? Indeed, does anyone own a proper 'antique' sword of at least 100 years old plus? ...
Just read on the Nine Circles website that they wont be at the UK Iaido Summer School this year and thought I'd pass on the info: http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/
I damaged my left thumb whilst dancing a month ago. (dont ask me how, i was moshing, then stopped and then it hurt, maybe i need to drink to avoid injuries) it swelled and bruised so i have rested it since as much as possible. Both joints were effected Anyways, yesterday i used my iaito for the...
Whilst training yesterday i felt some movement in the tsuka of my iaito. the fittings seem tight on normal testing so i need to get everything open (whilst not training it lives under a big glass shelf so it may have been damaged whilst flying..in a plane it doesnt have wings, thats the next...
I have been wandering aimlessly around t'internet but cant find anything. I am wanting to re-wrap a mogito Chidokan made me, but want to look at different styles of how to do it rather than the basic diamonds and triangles with the stupidly hard knott on the tsuka kashira Does anyone know of...

Hey folks, I'm practicing Iaido for a year now, but I'm still having problems tying the obi correctly. Problem: I am a woman and all of my colleagues are male. So they don't have the problem of hips and waist and beeing pretty thin and can't show me a proper way to tie it. So, what would you...
Well, the bogu section has the thread has pics of yourself in bogu, why don't we have one of pics with us and our swords? I've gotta dash off to work so I can't start it. Just a thought :)
