    2nd Dan 'graveyard'

All, I was thinking the other day about all the people who have trained at our club and it suddenly dawned on me that most ( not all) people either leave at two points in their training. Either; in the first few weeks because it's not for them or they have other commitments or they get...

What are you willing to give up for kendo?

    Thread Starter: Fuzzy

Hi Everyone, I've come around to thinking about what I am willing to give up for kendo. I understand the motivations in turning up to the dojo each week and pushing the envelope to improve, whether it be in shiai or better kendo. This is more about what I'm willing to lose rather than what I...

    Bokuto as a Training Aid

    Thread Starter: Kokoro777

I often hear that Iaidoka don't do enough suburi. So to address, this I decided to use my bokuto for some suburi practise but then I thought, shouldn't I just use my Iaito or is there something about a bokuto that can be helpful to an Iaidoka? If there is, can anyone recommend some exercises of...

E-Bogu Nadeshiko Shinai: Any experiences with it?

    Thread Starter: jeanyoung.lee

Greetings. I have been browsing through e-bogu.com's array of Tokusen Madake Shinai, and took some interest in the Nadeshiko (or Kenja) shinai. However, there seems to be no feedback as of yet. Has anyone here owned or tried this model? If so, how is it in terms of durability, weight, ease of...

Hosted in a surprisingly small gymnasium at the Osaka Sangyo University campus, the "Osaka Student Championships (Osaka Gakusei Taikai)" was conducted and completed on Sunday 18th April, 2010. The 49th year running for the male competitors and the 60th year for the women, (one of few student kendo events where the female division has a longer history than the males) representitives from approximately twenty universities from Osaka-Fu crammed in to watch 8 shiai-jo running full time from 9:30am until 4pm on a beautiful Osaka spring day.

The levels of the competitors varied considerably as did that of the shimpan, however positioned as the first taikai of the season, it seems the students view this event as a way to blow out the Christmas cobwebs... That is to say, it is a chance to sus out the competition and get the wheels rolling towards next month's Kansai Taikai - prelims for the All Japans.

At a Budo Gakkai seminar held in Tokyo yesterday, March 28th, FIK Secretary General Sato Yukio said that the selection criteria for the World Kendo Champs host country were to be changed after the next WKC. The current system sees the host nation rotate around one of the regional zones, Asia, Europe, the Americas. Exactly what the new criteria will be has yet to be decided, but this is planned to be resolved in time for a decision to be made and announced at the time of the 15th World Kendo Champs to be held in Italy in 2012.

Stay tuned for a more in-depth report on the Budo Gakkai seminar, which also featured team trainer to the Japan team at the 14th WKC last year, Takahashi Kentaro, UK rep. Stuart Gibson, former UK coach and regular Kendo World contributor Honda Sotaro and our own editor-in-chief Alex Bennett. The name of the Japanese team-member who is known for his cos-play antics will also be revealed...
