I'm the Shibucho for Spain of MJER Yamauchi ha in the Komei Jyuku, and I train with Sekiguchi Komei soke, but I'm happy if we have the oportunity of trainining with high level iai instructors no mather koryu or lineage.
I think it is beautiful that 2 friends can train MJER no mather what is the soke, anyways, the kata name are the same ^_^
I'm very glad that you're talking with my friend Manuel Rodas, I hope that one day we can found in Madrid dojos of MJER Yamauchi and Iwata.
    Best Regards.

    Hi Tim!
Long time ago since we talk in this Kendo World forums!
    I hope you're fine ^_^
Two days ago, one of my students talk me about a letter. He says, "I've recived a letter from one of Iwata sensei students, his name is Tim Hamilton, do you know it?" I said, of course! jaja "don't ever call me sensei-chidokan" XD
Now he study with me, in my dojo, basic seitei iai Zen Nihon Kendor Renmei Iai, but I know he wants to open a new dojo in the future for seitei and MJER Ikeda or Iwata lines. You tell him in the mail about the oportunity of trainig with 2 instructors of seitei and MJER, and I said him that if he organice all, I'll give all my help, and I give my dojo for training.

  4. thanks for the invite! I am trying to set up a visit for late this year/ early next.... I usually stop with Nishimoto sensei (near Shukugawa station) so am guessing it is not that far, relatively speaking, for a trip down to you? If you are in Osaka, do you know Isshikki sensei, hachidan in butokukai and one of Iwata sensei's students? He was my training partner last time I was over, he is REALLY good.... I couldn't actually copy some of the stuff he was doing despite my best efforts... I think he hangs out at the university...not sure and can get an address if you don't know him...

    Hi Tim,

I was just wondering if you would like to pop into Osaka next time you are here and have a training session with us at Meishinkan?

You must be due to visit Iwata sensei again soon?

    Cheers

Japan trips... and how they don't turn out the way you planned for....

by chidokan on 27th December 2011 at 08:30 AM
As usual I wrote ahead and set an itinerary down for myself for the 14 day trip... 7 days training at Seinen no Ie Ozu, down to Kannonji to visit sensei's grave, then back to Kyoto for a bit of iai related shopping/touristy stuff, with night time training...
The original plan was to hammer away at the partner work with Neil after the days' main training was over... That went out the window as Dirk, Neil and Yuriko were translating Iwata senseis notes every evening! Fortunately Chin san from

what makes a 'superstar' iaidoka???

by chidokan on 15th February 2010 at 08:42 AM
I have been posed a question that I thought some others might be interested in..

What makes a hachidan hanshi/ 'top instructor' be so far above his students that they all look up to him with the feeling of 'no hope of catching him'???

I have some of the answers, but not all.... perfect technique and timing are part of these, as is posture and projection, but what is the thing that makes the 'wow' factor? How do you get that 'presence on the mat'???

Choosing iaito for junior students

by chidokan on 8th February 2010 at 04:08 AM
It's that time of year when my first year students buy swords for the first time, so I thought I might explain my logic for choosing 'first swords' for junior students.... Note I have different requirements for swords as people progress in ability, etc... Hopefully others will chime in with their thoughts...

I have a variety of swords in different lengths that my beginners use before buying their first sword, plus access to my other students swords to help determine length required.

A question of grip for MJER iai...

by chidokan on 27th December 2009 at 06:46 PM
One of the main points to come up on my last visit to see my sensei was 'grip'... It was interesting to see how highly he ranked it in importance, however following the logic it was easy to see why...
Consider the effect of gripping the tsuka too tightly... the arms tense right through into the shoulders and they are pulled forward. Posture gone, balance is out, and you cannot swing the sword in an natural manner. In extreme cases, the shoulder blades can 'wing out' away from the back and

MJER...one of the ways of the sword

by chidokan on 20th December 2009 at 02:16 AM
I hate Xmas... my dojo has to shut.... However on the bright side I now have some plans for various seminars.
First up is a trip up to 'sunny' scotland over Xmas holidays for a couple of days training, which is better than visiting in-laws any day of the week...
Next I have pinned down a date in March for my own dojo to run a days training session, which will give the senior instructors a chance to get together and organise the big seminar in September...Hopefully we will have
