replied to Harai men - When to use?
    in Waza
This is a hard question. I can only answer that by use it when it works. In other words, keep trying it when you think it's appropriate and note when it works and when it does not. Unfortunately kendo is not a cookbook.

€‹Looks like I was not clear.. I probably should have said that as someone who teaches a university class for kendo, and runs a university club, the unsolicited email I got was welcome and timely. I called and asked about how class members could cash in on the discount and added that information to...

World Kendo Championships in Tokyo May 2015

Who here is planning to go as a spectator? Might be fun to arrange a meet up. There will be four people in a group I'm getting together. I believe another dojo in Michigan is arranging a group as well. How about the rest of the world?

Ya know it could just be he sent the right email to the wrong email address? These things do happen. I've done it myself more times than I'd really be happy to admit.

The only unsolicited email I've gotten from e-mudo were special sale price offers for university students. I've bought stuff from e-mudo, my students both in the University class I teach and at MSU kendo club for years without any issues. He's been responsive and given good service. If I got something...

That and do what they tell you to do without thinking much about why and how. What you should get from an 8 week class is an answer to the question: Do I wan to do this more than 8 weeks?...

Hmnm... this can probably only be one person. Handlers...entourage? I must be lucky or on the inside. Usually he's the one inviting _me_ to drink with him. Actually from a cultural point of view, having a beer or 6 or something a bit stronger with sensei is often a very good way to get an open exchange...

There are two answers. The book answer and, well something else. The book says
    1. Kakarite steps forward with the right foot while knocking motodachi's bokuto out of the way with the left shinogi in an upward motion (harai-age), and then brings the bokuto down to cut shomen.

    So no...

  • Let's see. To answer this question I guess I'd ask. Did Japanese wear armor. If kenjutsu is intended to train one in combat swordsmaship, then if Japanese wore armor the answer would be most likely yes, there were techniques for fighting in and against armor.

replied to Questions Regarding Bowing and Bogu Challenge
I guess one more thought to tie this together. The point and purpose of practice is to improve the kendo of your club members. Practices should be planned and conducted with that in mind. Even if one did not consider the 'gauntlet' hazing, I think you might find that it's not a good use of the most...

    replied to Purpose of kiai
As Dillon says there are two timings? types? of kiai. Pre strike and at the moment of strike. They have different purposes in my opinion.
Pre-strike - well there are (my opinion) two things going on. First is if you are faced with an opponent whose sword is pointed such that if you attack you...

I don't know about naginata but every year the ZNKR packages up bogu for donation to foreign countries. Here's an article about the 2014 donation: https://www.kendo-fik.org/english-pa...esentation.htm

...so one possibility is to write to the ZNKR? IKF? and ask...

replied to Question about sword arts in general
    in FAQ
Interesting question. To answer that I think we first have to answer the question of what does it mean to be "great at Kendo/Kenjutsu". There are quite a few potential answers to that including:
    * To be competitively successful.
    * To grow as a human being as described by the...
