    I've always felt that Katsugi waza were sort of a desperation last resort. When you're not able to use 'normal' seme to open up and things are at a stalemate you pull it out of your uh..hat. and the element of surprise will (hopefully) make it work. Certainly it's not something I think you'd want...

    I totally agree Neil. That's why the third paragraph is there.

    I sometimes think the rule book is as small and, sometimes as vague, as it is exactly so that there can be those bits of play in what constitutes an ippon. I think this is why I like it when more experienced kenshi are doing...

    Unfortunately my shiai rulebook is loaned out so I can't quote the relevant passages on what constitutes an ippon. My recollection (someone with the little blue book will correct me if I'm wrong) is that the definition of ippon does not include any statement about kiai (I'm stretching my recollection...

    The bigger issue is not sanpmamori. Or whatever other 'ugly' bit of kendo you'd like to cite. I think Neil skated around this. The root of the problem is that winning shiai means a lot. Winning shiai is more valuable to some? many? all competitors than creating the sort of kendo we would call beautiful....
