    My thoughts exactly. while shinai certainly do degrade over time, and sometimes you do get a bum one, a shinai, or its "cords", shouldn't break like you're describing. Because simply, the cuts in Kendo don't result in such things. The bamboo might splinter or crack, but the cords/ties/tsuru...

    I used to wear glasses when I was younger. Like you, I've got pretty bad eyesight.

    So, for Kendo I used to simply not wear my glasses same as what you're doing now, and same as you, it was really hard for me to judge distance, strikes, and basically ... everything.

    I remember...

    Berkeley eh? Well there's two dojos in the area. Berkeley dojo and Oakland dojo. You can find their websites from here:

    I'm an Oakland member. I can tell you that both clubs are very friendly and always welcome beginners.

    All true, but hell, it was great to sit in my living room and see Kendo on my TV right off a major network. I know a few of the Team USA guys and it was super cool to see them in that medium.

    Wow, that's a challenge you have for sure. However, perhaps there could be a way, but the best method in finding out is to go to your local dojo and speak with the head teacher there. You would have to assume that if it's within the realm of possibility, a good teacher would welcome this as an opportunity...

    Have you contacted the OSU kendo club directly to ask about joining? I know that some university clubs make exceptions for non-student/faculty members. Happens quite often.
