    In general, weapons practice in Aikido is used to further the empty hand techniques. I do not believe that aikijo originates from the same place as SMR or ZNKR jodo.

    Depends on the length and location. If I am going to be gone for more than a week and I know there is a dojo (especially if I have visited before), I will take it. I use a golf travel bag which will hold bogu, shinai and extra clothes, although you do have to be careful about weight.

    The party hat is a way of tying the tenugui. You've probably seen it, that's where you fold it in half lengthwise with the folded side away from you. Turn one end of the tenugui downward at a 45 degree angle pointing away from its original end. Then do the same for the other end of the tenugui. Flip the whole thing...

    I've always just seen a ponytail at the nape of the neck, makes it easier for the himo too. Maybe a french braid would work?

    They can try the "party hat" style as well, that will tend to cover more hair and hopefully get less tangles.

    Cow hide is still used on cheap kote, I don't recommend it. If you are just looking for small pieces to do patchwork, you can get deer leather at Michael's (chain craft store) if you have one....

    I find gradings stressful as well. Andy had good advice for you. I've always had to fly for my gradings, and found it useful to try to get to a practice the night before. Shake out the nerves, have a keiko with some fresh faces. The day of, if the venue allows it, I like to get a really good warm...
