    Ah, I see where the problem lies. You seem to be attempting to give a concrete definition to a phrase (mushin) from a context driven language (Japanese). Many people that are unfamiliar with Japan and the Japanese tend to get caught in that same trap, as evidenced by the many 'do' vs. 'jutsu' arguments...

    I have been taught that mushin is achieved through familiarity and repetitious correct practice, not by some secret sauce recipe that was lost to history. Kata doesn't fail if it hasn't been practiced enough, it just isn't to the highest level yet. Lower level students practice kata in the koryu much...
