Wow Ben!! You must have an extremely calm mind while doing kendo. The psychological trauma and intensity of kendo is nothing compared to the caring of a child!!
:)
My shinai name is the "Boom Stick"! :)
Actually, it is called CF-39. The name is printed on the side (yes, I own a Carbon Fibre Shinai, size 39). :)
Hmm... about the putting on the Kote.
It isn't so much that your right hand is free, but it deals mostly with the construction of real kote (kote-ate).
Real kote are armored sleeves and are really...
Either should be fine. Just don't get bogu from eBay! :)
I would use different words than 'antique' or 'vintage' to describe most of those sets. I think I would use words that are explicitives...
My training program consists of gathering firewood and water from a stream and carrying it back to my teachers house, located on a mountain top, several times a day! :)
I really don't have a real...
Old teachers rest? I thought they don't need to rest. They hardly break a sweat! :)
Seriously, some of the older teachers (reallly old) do need to sit out once in a while.
I thought the only time...
Hmm... I am surprised you don't have the pexi-glass do listed. They are light, cheap, but bend a lot. Provides protection for most do hits, but feels like you are wearing nothing when fighting more...
I heard that doing jump rope helps with your reflexes. I haven't tried it. Any comments?
As Kuri mentioned, the best way to increase your speed is kakarigeiko.
Salt water also works.
Of course, the old school method is to set the dye with your sweat (ie: by practicing in it, you set it). However, I really don't like looking like a smurf after practice...

(Yeah, I started it) :)
Just to emphasize a point, it would be a good idea to wax the edges of the shinai...
The day they replace the tenegui with a hair net, I think I would kill myself! :)
More seriously, beside the innovations to make kendo more safe (eg: men shield), the bogu and equipment more durable...
Hmm... I have to disagree wuth Jenny. The original Kendo Kata (created in the late 19th century), was made from different ryuha
1) Hasso of the Jikishin-kage Ryu
2) Henka of the Kuruma Ryu
3)...

You can use most types of leather and try to make the loops yourself. However, you...
Sunuke is not camphor.
I believe the tree name is "Isu no ki", a variety of Oak. "Isu no ki", which grows about 20-25 meters tall, and 1 meter in diameter, grows in Kyushu, primarily in the...
Doing kendo with Laryngitis. I was yelled at for the lack of Kiai, and for not improving my kiai after the notice.
It took them a while to realize that I had no voice! :)
I do the same as Kendoboy (using a pocket knife to get the opening bigger). A broom handle wrapped with sand paper is a good way to smooth the bore down and for the fine adjustments to the diameter...
I swear by my Sunuke bokuto. Denser than oak, and pretty to look at. It doesn't dent easily, and can put some serious dents into oak.
"The amount of friends you make in Kendo is directly proportional to the frequency of washing your uwagi."
Attack, Attack, Attack!! But Kendo is not suicide!
The only thing that I can think of is an HUD in the men that tells you the time. Being that some dojos do not have any clocks, and wearing watches is forbidden, it wouldn't be such a bad idea. :)
Zanshin, is basically making sure the opponent is dead or dying. :)
Seriously, zanshin was developed to make sure that you were aware that the opponent was dead.
All iaito are all usually made that way, and as far as I know, so are the kendo kata iaito. The mekugi is not a cone, but a peg, and doesn't really need to be there.
I wish it wasn't made that...
I agree with alex. I also bought my iaito from tozando. The quality is top notch: they use real same (skate skin) for the tsuka, laquered saya, etc... in short, the only thing that is fake about it...
A little of topic, how much mekugi does it take to attach that sword to the tsuka? And how long is the nakago?
