Hi guys! I visited the dojo last January and signed up for the beginners class for next month. Unfortunately, I just learned from my boss that I have to take a few trips around the country for project evaluation -- on Saturdays! I'm worried this will disrupt my training. So my question really is, what should I do when I miss a class/es? Is there a way to make up? Help! Thanks

best way is to ask your batch mates on what happened on the day you were absent, and try to get to the dojo earlier so as to practice what youve learned. and regarding absences, you should have a 70% attendance rating with the club, max of 30% of absences. it would also be good if you practice at home what youve learned (ie suburi), really helps in conditioning.

hmm, joining fee. that would be the basic. bring yourself, wear comfortable clothing for training (preferably jogging pants and shirt), you dont have to bring the fee for payment at the first meeting, you can give it at the second meeting, theyll say how much it is. oh and dont be late, be sure to come at the dojo early as there will be cleaning. i myself go at least an hour before training starts. other stuff (like shinai and kendogi) will be used at a later time, so dont fuzz over it yet.

beginners class (in which im currently included) compromise of 10 people, upper batch above us would be like on that number also, then all sempai's would reach about 30-40+, according to how many attends. ive never got to check how many sempais are there. but roughly that number. and two senseis, yamanishi sensei and akita sensei.

i'm new in this forum and "would be" a new member of the club. for begginers like me (who's a 28 yr old "big" guy)... is it ok if i start my first day wearing my hakama and keinko? (did i spell that right? i got it back in California) and am i too old to actually join a class? i'm thinking that my class would probably consist of teens then they would suddenly see Chewbakka training with them (hehehe)

also, any one in the dojo selling shinai? i only have a datio bokken that i bought in recto a few months back (thanks to theives). how much will a second hand bogu set cost me? will i need it as early as training on July?

my YM id is pparero... i'm ussually on-line during nights kasi i work sa call center... or if someone is kind enough to assist me... please do give me a call at 917 3615. that's my direct line sa office.

    Hi there pparero!

Re you question about age or being too old, check out this thread.

As for your other queries, some if not most of the relevant info you can get here courtesy of kaneida-san.

Hope this helps and see you soon!

its ok if you now have your hakama and keikogi, but for the mean time, wear a comfortable shirt and jogging pants, cause it really wouldnt look uniform if you were the only one wearing them in your batch (consideration to other beginners). and also, one reason would be that for the beginning part of training, the sempais have to train you on footwork, and they really couldnt see how you do it if you wear hakama. and your not too old for kendo, as long as your having fun, keep on doing it. oh, and dont fuzz on thinking the class will consist of teens, thats ok, your all students when you start anyway take my batch for example, youngest would be like 22 or 23 i think, oldest is like 40+.

dont worry about the shinai, the dojo sells one for beginners. as for the bokken, you have to check it out with the sempais if its the correct one, from what ive heard, bokken from that place doesnt have the correct height and weight. as for bogu, there arent any places selling it here, you have to order online, so no way to know how much a second hand will be. youll have like more than 6 months to save, as bogu wouldnt be worn for the first 6 months (heck even i dont know when we'll wear bogu, my batch is the jan 2007 batch).

Um...just so you know, you won't be required to pay any fees until the beginners' class starts, which is on July 7. You're more than welcome to drop by on Saturday to watch us practice (so you'll have an idea what we do), but to ease your aching head, you won't have to pay any fees yet.

    Cheers!
