Well, kaneida beat me to it, but yes he made a good suggestion. I for one made my own shinai case back when I was a beginner. Normally you would purchase from the club, but I think we're out of stock, right? So my suggestion would be to make do first with a homemade one, then think of getting a "real" one later if you feel like it.

The most basic idea is that the many kenjutsu ryu teach primarily through kata (though that is a poor generalization), while kendo teaches through sparring. There are many threads on this forum discussing that, you can get a better insight by reading them as I don't think I'm qualified to speak beyond kendo.

I'm assuming that this is the one along Ayala Ave. If so, then it's not near the dojo, but from there you should have easy access to EDSA, through which you can ride the MRT or take a cab going to Pioneer Street/Boni Avenue where the dojo is.

But i will be able to join on july.
Oh well see you all on July..
Well, hope to see you in July then. Did you stick around to watch the practise? I'm hoping you did, so that you'll have an idea what training involves.

Hope this helped the lot of you.

Hey everyone, I really like this thread I got lot's of information about kendo in the Philippines, I will be visiting The Philippines in a few months around June/July, and I saw that there was only one dojo which is Manila Kendo Club. I look forward to get to chat with a few of the members.
By the way, I do kendo too but I reside in Aruba.

Well, I hope that your visit pushes through. It's always nice to have the chance to keiko with kendoka from other places.

This is surprising though, I didn't know there was kendo in Aruba. Get to keiko with the BeachBoys often? Just kidding...

Anyway feel free to post on this thread if you want to talk to us. Or you can contact us via PM if you want other contact details.

I'm very psyched about the trip, it will be the first time to go back to the country I was born. I have a question though, I read somewhere in the forums that you guys buy your bogu from Korea or Japan through the internet, can someone pls tell me which site to go? I plan to buy a new set when I get there.

    thanks a bunch.

Well, a lot of us get our stuff from Kendoshop, a Korean supplier (www.kendoshop.com). Some others get from Tozando or E-bogu, very familiar brands for you I would think. Though just to warn you, it usually takes a week at least for delivery, due to the local bureau of customs related stuff.

Just to inquire, are you buying a new set just for the occasion? Why not simply bring your old set then?

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for the info Togashi-san.
I'm familiar with kendoshop and ebogu but didn't know about tozando. I would like to buy a new set because the one that I'm using is the club's, I thought it would be a little bit less pricey if I bought it there since it's closer to Japan and Korea. Maybe I'll buy one before I go there.

By the way, I hope you don't mind me asking, but why wasn't there a team sent for the 13WKC? (hope I'm not being rude)

    Thank you once again

    till next post

wouldn't recommend you buying the bogu over there if you're staying for less than a month. most bogu orders take a month or so.

Ah, I see. Well, as taganahan pointed out in his post, it might not be feasible to order a set when you get here, so might I make a suggestion? Why not order before going, and just have it sent to a relative here, if that's how you want to go about it? That way, you'll be sure to have it in time to use it for practise. Now I can't vouch for the other suppliers, but kendoshop usually ships it out fast if they have what you want on stock. Give them a week to deliver to the Philippines, more or less.

As for sending a team to the WKC...well, it's because the MKC isn't exactly FIK approved yet. Besides that, we're only a relatively poor club. We can't send people abroad officially using our funds (even as near as Taiwan), and the members we would send to such an event mostly can't afford it. Ah well...

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!

    Question Naginata in the Philippines?

To my comrades here in the Philippines: Does anyone know of a dojo/school/club that teaches naginata? Thanks.
