Bar exams? Oh boy, now that's a challenge! I'm sure you'll do great. I agree that you should focus first on review and then join us afterwards. Good luck!

My thoughts exactly. Maybe a good match would be between a kendoka doing nito against an arnisero using double sticks, watchatink?

Actually, it's arnisador, not arnisero...Maybe we could organize an exhibition match someday, sorta like an MMA challenge for weapon arts! That would be cool! I still do have some connections with the FMA community even if I'm currently inactive, I was once a committee head in the Filipino Martial Arts Congress of the Philippines a few years back. However, we do have to agree on some form of rules, 'coz even in the Arnis/FMA community there are various set of rules depending on the governing body organizing the tournaments. Two of the main divisions are those of Arnis Philippines (ARPI) and NARAPHIL (not sure what it stands for).

Oops, my bad. Gomen. Arnisador, have to remember that.
Hmmm. That's not a bad idea (re: MMA challenge for weapons arts). Let's see what we can do. The way I see it, it's going to be complicated due to differences between the two budos or martial arts. But I don't think it's impossible.

I agree! By the way, where and how much can I buy a shinai? I also have a friend who's into fencing, and I was playfully inviting her to spar, that would be interesting to see as well! Some arts would have advantages and disadvantages over the others, but that's just the way it is, no one art is supreme anyway. Oh, have you seen the discovery channel's Mythbusters where they pitted different swords against each other? The Katana came out to be the best! It didn't break nor chip against the European swords!

reading brings back so many memories

I came back to read the new thread, and well... memories... argh

    I miss kendo

And I probably won't be back in the dojo till after I graduate from my masters degree, just like Sage. And that will be.... two years from now?

    geez

    *sigh*

Anyways, have fun you guys, and continue loving kendo.

too have an idea on how much shinai's cost, you can visit www.kendoshop.com, there are different kinds of shinai's there, the basic one would be shinai-musim, which cost about $16, then plus the shipping. sadly enough, there are no local shops here selling kendo equipment.

Really?! So you mean to say that all of you bought your shinai from abroad? Does the sensei sell some?

well for us beginners, initially we buy from the club. but for personal use such to say as you want to buy other stuff (another shinai, bokken, etc), we have to order online. even bogu is ordered online and shipped here.

Kamua-san I have to apologize yet again for not replying immediately. Went on a trip for four days so I wasn't able to go online (yes, I suffered major withdrawal symptoms Ü). Re kendo vs fencing, here's an interesting video @ YouTube showing just how that kind of match will go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ST1wRzfgmI
Who wins is arguable but the fencer got the first point. You're right, no one budo can claim supremacy -- we just need to look at the MMA phenomenon to realize that. I haven't seen that discovery show. I'll try to look for it. Lastly, I think the guys here have answered your shinai related question but to recap, it costs P1,750 right now and you can get one from the MKC dojo. Just go to the kind japanese lady at the table and inquire whether they have stock. If not, I think she can order one for you but you'll have to wait until another batch is shipped. This is assuming of course that you've signed up.

Arigato guzaimasu! So I really have to sign up then! When is the next beginner's class? I plan to start this summer. Regarding the video, I already saw it, and yes, it seemed the fencer scored the hit first, but I still maintain that Kendo is more powerful and deadly, most especially with the use of the Katana.
