As far as I know, Ken-do is a watered down version of Ken-Jutsu, it's more adjusted for sports. Ken-jutsu, on the other hand, is the application of several techniques during a real combat. That means, if you know some grappling/jujitsu, you can very well apply it when the opponent is way too close to you, as the sword will become ineffective. Both style uses the same stuff - bogu, shinai, hakama, gi, men, etc. For the shinai, Kenjutsu uses a black handle. Basically, the footwork is standard.
Historically, Kenjutsu was developed in the 12th century as part of samurai training. Later on, particularly in the Sengoku period (I think), Iaido was formed. It was in the 18th century that Kendo was given birth as a safe and combative sport that reflects Kenjutsu techniques.

To say that Kendo is a "watered down" version of Kendo may not be accurate as thru the years, each art now caters to different markets with different purposes (although, there are overlaps)...but I see where you're coming from.

There are differences in practice, as well. In Kenjutsu, the types of cuts (not strikes) include horizontal cuts (yoko-ichi-monji) and upward diagonal cuts (gyakko kessagiri). The use of the kashida (or the butt of the sword handle, tsuka) can also be used. The body targets also differ, as kenjutsu has more options compared to kendo. Movement-wise, I have observed that kenjutsu focuses on delivering a solid cut from the manouchi (last 10-12 inches of the blade)...and not just a "tapping" action. However, both emphasize on good teno-uchi (grip) and zanshin (loosely interpreted as "presence of mind").

For the equipment: Koryu, or traditional schools, in Kenjutsu don't even use a bogu and shinai (especially if it's just kumitachi, or "pre-programmed practice"). However, as there were benefits to the use of the bogu, it was later on implemented with modern Kenjutu practice...but the bokken is still used and not the shinai.

Caveat...I only have had limited exposure to all 3 arts and Japanese history...so beware of my pretentious. =)

    In addition:

Footwork, more or less is the same. It depends on the school's principles and preference. For example, weight distribution on your left and right legs are different. Some prefer an offensive stance, while others would like to have a reserved appearance. The locking of the knees may also differ, as some would like to have them "unlocked" and ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

You are correct that jiu-jitsu techniques is more applicable in kenjutsu. I was lucky to attend a workshop with seiza (seated) techniques with the wakizashi (short sword) with jiu-jitsu take-downs (and it was awesome).

    Hi All,

I am interested in joining MKC. I have few questions.

    • I'm 25 years old. Am I still qualified?
    • Trainings are only during Saturdays 5 - 7 PM?
    • Dojo is at Pasig Pioneer?
    • Next batch for training will start this coming July 2010?
