Yes, we still have a session April 3rd even though it's Black Saturday... :]

There's the waiting list, but I don't think it would matter... XD
It's because I also signed into the waiting list last year, and when I joined this January they didn't really mind the waiting list >.>

Just observe one session and be at the Dojo/Gym on the 1st weekend of July for registration...=w= d

    Cool then.

Meanwhile, is it smart to buy a shinai while waiting to be registered? D: I'm really itching for it.

its smart timeframe-wise. ordering and getting a shinai takes a while and its wise to order early so once that you will actually be needing it, its already in your hands. there's no rush really, as first weeks of training will only be involving etiquette and footwork. no swords.

training-wise imho no. self-training is not really encouraged because people tend to develop bad habits (that will be eventually corrected later on) if not supervised at all.

Relax, it's still 3 months away. :P As suneohair had suggested, there's no rush as the first phase of training is footwork basically. I have to warn you though, in the first few weeks of training, you'll develop blisters on your foot, so be prepared to have water bubbles. What I do strongly suggest for now is for you to get used to sitting in seiza (Japanese sitting posture), with importance on a straight back.

Haha yeah that's what I was thinking. I'm already practicing seiza, and it's ridiculously harder than it looks. I'm kinda used to being barefoot (as long as it's not a rough surface like cement), so that might not be a big problem.

I guess I'll try to order one just for time saving, and the fact that it's pretty exciting to see the shinai sitting in my room. I don't need to practice swinging it or anything.

Though... I'm a little worried. Since I have a little training in Kali (and I've actually been brushing up on the basics of it again) do you think the striking philosophies and techniques might affect me negatively in kendo later on? I sure hope not. D:

I don't think so. What is important is that you strengthen your arms. If you have a dumbbell at home, it will be a good start. I use a 30lb dumbbell to strengthen both my arms with a full swing movement.

If you can't stop your self from buying a shinai.

Get a size 38 and a round handle. It is what will be required of you.

A 39 is too heavy and you wont need the extra length.
An oval handle is good to learn from but you wont be able to shift to a round handle later on. It is much better to start with a round handle and learn the basics and then
shift to your preference later on.

I am from the 2010 Jan group and this was mentioned to us after the first month.

    Cheers,
