Your wife's a lawyer? And a professor at that?!

    Iaido follow-up

Hello, Google led me to this forum. This is a reply of sorts to people who are interested in Iaido in Manila.

I am looking into forming a study group for Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo (of the Nippon Iaido Renmei). I have been training in the style for about two years, was promoted to shodan last year, and was granted permission to share my training with others. Currently I am scouting out dojos and hope to hold an introductory seminar soon.

Interested parties should feel free to PM me; I am still ironing out the details.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Hey, that sounds great! I think a lot of people from MKC (active and not-so-active) would be interested if you do manage to put up a study group. Feel free to keep us updated on your progress, either through this thread or one of your own.

    Cheers!

i'm interested in learning kendo. as a form of sports. unfortunately, i'm currently in china right now, working, but i'll be back home in june or july. i would love to learn this.

    questions:

1where is the exact location of the training area, please post a map.
2where do i buy equipments, i know what they say is that you have to watch first. but one thing i know about me, if i want to learn, i'll pick up sticks and wipe cars like karate kid did.
3is this form of sport really rigorous enough to shave off my fat? heheheh. seriously it doesn't matter, i really want to learn, i'm just kidding.
4how much would i be needing, unfortunately, i hate reading forums so expect me to have not read everything. unless its a manual.
5do i have to start, juxtaposed with children? coz that would be... hehehe
gay. since i'm a beginner. but if to i have to start with that, that's ok i guess, so long they don't bully me.
6what would be the schedules? or can i set my schedules?
7do we have to learn japanese and stuffs? coz my memory sucks.
8can anyone email me specifics? so i can prepare things? like fees and such
9do we get to wear that japanese samurai attire? or just the wiremesh thing on the head.
10what do i need now to learn? so i can research what i'm getting into and start right now, even without the physical training yet. like manuals and stuffs.

well, all of those questions are answered in this thread we have here. well to cut to the chase, heres the answers:

    1. the dojo is located in RFM gym, sheridan corner pioneer st., pasig. for a map, you can go to http://www.manilakendo.com or http://www.goignition.com/mkc/map1.htm

    2. equipment is bought online as there is no local shop selling those items.

    3. well you do want to learn, better attend a training session to gauge it, its every saturday, 5-7pm.

    4. for starters, youd need 2000 for registration and 1500 for the first two months.

    5. no, youll be with beginners also with varying ages, from high school or college level to people as old as 40+. its open to all ages.

    6. as said above, training would be every saturday, 5-7 pm.

    7. yes, we do have to learn japanese stuff.

    8. well, i will be forwarding this stuff to you again.

    9. well be wearing hakama and gi, just check googles for those. and the armor too (bogu)

    10. it would be better to watch a training session to get a glimpse on what you want to enter. itll give you a view of what were doing.

well, for other inquiries, just message me on my ym, jbernardez@yahoo.com. and we do stress (as togashi sempai stated) to please attend first a training session to see what you would want to be doing. and you can talk to the nice lady in front desk also for more inquiries.
Me and you are caught up in the same flow... I'm just swimming against it

    1. don't they sell in that in the dojo itself? it's really hard to get one for me.

    2. yehey! i'm not alone!

    3. learn japanese? like what? do we get japanese names too? hehehe.

    4. googling. found it. do you have a manual. email me. i'll PM you.

    5. nope. i'm already convinced. ever since i was little, i've always wanted to learn that. but unfortunately, the province only has one type of weapon based martial arts. "monoblock chair".

    6. like i said, i'm all set. just waiting to get home and learn.

    Hello there,

Just to make some further clarifications, since kaneida has stepped in already:

Just wondering where in China you're working, if you don't mind me asking? Cause there are kendo clubs in China, and if you want to view what training is like to at least get an idea of what practise is, you can (depending on where you are) try to find one nearby and see for yourself. The nice thing about kendo is that the training regimen in one club would be similar to the training in others, so viewing the training in China would give you an idea of the training here in Manila.

To begin with, you won't be needing all the equipment at the start. You'll be needing the shinai (bamboo practise sword), which you can purchase from the club. The bogu (sparring armor) you won't really be needing til after six months of beginner training. This you can get on-line, or, if you're lucky, from the club also, cause we do sell some second hand stuff. These are mainly high school kid sized though, so adults might have some problems fitting them.

Er...why would that be gay? If some of the kids in the dojo heard you say something like that (and I believe some of them DO read these forums...or at least their parents anyway), I think they would gladly show you how "gay" it is to train with them...But seriously, don't close your mind to the training possibilities. If you found yourself lucky enough to start in a beginners' batch that was ALL composed of kids, so what? You might actually find yourself learning something in the process.

The only Japanese you'll have to learn are terms that are generally used in kendo. So even if your memory sucks, weekly repetition for the six month beginners' course will probably burn them in your memory.

Well, you can research these forums (I know you said you don't like reading forums, but think of it as an exercise in patience) to start, there are a lot of helpful threads, especially the stickies. Also you can try the FIK website, here. But kendo is an art of "doing"...none of the research can properly prepare you for the reality. The only thing that is asked would be for you to show up with an "empty cup" and to keep on showing up.

Well...you can, if you want to. Most people in the dojo would look at you strangely though if you did, hehehe.

Lastly, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but we only accept beginners in during the first Saturdays of January and July. This is so our instructors will have an easier time handling things. So if you're coming home in June or July, that might be cutting things rather close for the July class. Just so you know.

    Hope this helps.

don't you make an exemption? i'm really interested. it's basically because, these trainings gives us sound mind. making me think well, especially with my board exam coming up. what i was planning to do was, start there, then when i went back here, find a dojo to practice here, and then when i go back there still continue it there.

unfortunately, china's abit large, and it's really hard askingfor that here, since some of the locals don't like their culture.

anyway, i'm really interested, but if there's a way to make an exemption.

no, i don't want the japanese name. hehehe i just saw photos of names and flags written on some kind of lapel by your lower front of the torso.

"think of billy madison" if you've seen the film. children? old guy learning the basics? children hates him? picks on him? ain't that gay? hehehe. i'm just kidding about that.
